Power Gear Fluorescent Starter, FS-2, Standard ( 2-pin ), 2-Pack, 54388

I have an older Magnifying lamp with halo fluorescent bulb. It started acting up and I haven't had any problems with it in years.... so I figured it was the bulb. Well, I learned a thing or two about Starters and replacement starters. This model is the modern replacement for the Hx-2 old school ones. They are not easy to come by locally and Amazon had them for a really low price AND Available right away. Replaced the starter and build at the same time to be safe... and the workbench lamp fired right up bright as ever and not flickering like it was prior. Easy to install and works great. Will purchase again in the future when it is time to replace the current ones.

These fluorescent starters by GE are FAR SUPERIOR to those that were available in local chain stores.The GE starters have much greater mechanical strength due to the aluminum enclosure lugs folded into the contact end fitting. This type of manufacture easily withstands the twisting force necessary for insertion of the starter into the socket.Chinese made varieties are made with plastic enclosures, and the end fittings break loose when trying to insert them into the socket. We tried several brands of plastic/Chinese starters - all of them broke.Buy the GE fluorescent starters, and don't waste your money on the others...

It was very difficult to get this starter into the slots. I finally was successful by shining a flashlight into the space and carefully lining up the prongs and holes. It worked! For about 30 seconds. I put my kitchen under cabinet light back up and tried to turn it on and it did not work. I finally gave up on that starter. Thankfully there were two in the package. The second one seemed to go in easier, but then I did go straight to the flashlight and careful lining up of the holes. The second one worked and I was able to install and the light came on again with no problem. I did find a brand name package at Lowe’s for about $2.50 and bought that for back up. I will not order this brand from Amazon again.

In the US at least: The Energy Policy Act of 2005 stopped the production of magnetic ballasts by 1 January 2009. Short of some foreign made low wattage fixtures, new fixtures are either rapid or instant start (not requiring a starter at all by using an electronic ballast instead of magnetic ballast.) I have an old house, and still have an older fixture in my bathroom needing an FS-2 starter. 1 starter far outlasts many bulbs in general. The previous starter I replaced was also a GE brand FS-2 starter and it lasted me just over 20 years. I expect this starter to far outlast how long I stay in this home, and the spare to be there for the next owner well in the future.This is an inexpensive part. Narrowed the problem down to their direct wired starter bulb. Decided I'd improve on their design by adding a socket and this replaceable starter. Anyway if worked wonderfully and should result in superior starting that includes a capacitor across the starter bulb to cut down on electronic noise.Attached is a pic of what's inside the metal case.

Since adding these condensers to the machines on my route it seems like I've had fewer blown bulbs and condensers compared to the bargain condensers.

A 40+ year old fluorescent light above our stove stopped working. Changing the tube did not help. These were perfect replacements. Once installed the light fixture is working like new.

Worked well considering it was a suggested Amazon additional purchase to florescent tubes I was ordering. I never gave it a check on the fixture. Trusted the suggestion would work. It did. 🙂👍 Amazon !
