Both the ceiling and floor that the ends of the poles touch should be flat for this bar to work.

Can I connect 2 of these in an 'L' shape, so that I cover my bed on 2 sides?

I honestly don't know the answer for sure, but I don't believe so. I think you would have to buy 2 separate ones and put them close together as I don't see how to connect them together.

Can you place this on carpet? I only see it on tile and wood floors, but if I wanted to divide my living area and office, could it stand on carpet?

If the carpet has a low pile then it's worth a try. The tension may not hold if the carpet has too much give. I'd only use it on a thin, short carpet.
