Is the ceanothus concha shrub dark blue? The colour description says pink

It is a true blue. Not pale, not the darkest. It looks good.

I expect you could just use top soil, however I always try to give container plants and trees a boost by enriching the soil with some compost, or slow-release feed as the roots are limited in their reach in a container. Also I can't remember off the top of my head whether Ceanothus likes acid (ericaceous) or alkaline conditions so you might want to google that first and add the type of feed that is appropriate.

What are the dimensions for this plant?

They can grow to any height and width when they are fully established but you can trim them after flowering to whatever size you want it to be. My daughters is 6ft by 5ft at the moment, taking over her garden but she'll get it trimmed once the flowers have finished. Hope this helps.

What does they may be short lived mean ? Surely a plant should grow and if looked after live not die!!!

I’ve had a planted one for 8 years that is beautiful and a new one planted this year to fill a gap .. I assume the new one will be like the old one
