Magic, again from Suzy Lee
This book holds a very VERY special place in my heart as I used to be an ice skater, up at 5 am every morning for practice from the age of 5 until 11.Color, let’s talk about what color Suzy is using in this visually poetic book—pencil gray and red for the majority of the book, then in a departure for her, layers of new color—yellow, brown and green and a splash of blue. When I skated, my favorite thing was to be the first on the fresh ice. It was still wet from the Zamboni, it hadn’t enough time to dull in the cold, it was shiny and had a smell that in the cold of the arena felt fresh (even if in reality it was chemically). I loved being first because I could paint lines, drawing adventures with my blades, curves, and dots, swaths of stops, and holes from toe picks. Suzy Lee has brought that unbelievable moment for me back in a way it feels like I have never left the ice.I sit with this book and I am alive in a way I only ever was when I was skating. To say what she has created is Magic, just doesn’t quite cover it. But, it’s all I have. I am not going to tell you the story. I am only going to say that her use of the page, of page turns is something I have never seen any other person do.I wish I could thank her, personally, for making my world a more magical place.

Ice skating and drawing in a creative wordless story
What starts as a wordless book featuring a single ice skater making lines on pristine ice turns into something else when the skater falls and the artist gets frustrated. This is one that is impossible to describe sufficiently. You've just got to read it. Ice skating fans and winter sports fans should enjoy it for the fun with ice skating. Perfectionists, especially artists who are perfectionists can walk away with a little more as it is a subtle commentary on the potential beauty and even fun in mistakes they may be tempted to throw out.

Beautiful!
Lee’s wonderful book was absolutely breathtaking – she puts so much emotion into her pages that you can feel the joy of simple figure skating and horror of slipping and breaking that rhythm. The main character spends most of the book alone, in a world to herself as she skates over the sparsely colored pages, until her concentration is broken and she realizes that there are others to share in her love of winter fun. The story ends with a simple scenario that, to me, communicates many things. It can mean that you don’t need to be perfect or alone to have fun, or that sometimes you need to mess up to be better off – they’re all subtle meanings, but they are there if you want to discuss them with your child. I believe that kids will love to flip through the pages as they pore over the skating lines, being creative and making their own connections to the story. Please note I received a free review copy of this book.

Beautiful!
I first discovered Suzy Lee my first year as a school librarian. A teacher introduced me to her book, Wave, and I fell in love with Lee’s effortless illustrations that tell a beautiful story. Lee continues her magical storytelling in her latest book, Lines, where an unseen artist uses charcoal, pencil, and paper to create a scenic frozen pond. A single ice skater enters the drawing and as she glides across the ice, she leaves traces of lines showing her path. When she jumps and falls, the drawing is crumpled up. When it is unraveled, the lone skater is joined by others gliding past her on their bottoms with huge grins on their faces. One person stops to lift her up, and then the pond is filled with skaters enjoying a beautiful snowy afternoon.Even without words, the message that everyone makes mistakes and that it is important to try again comes through clearly. This book is beautiful, meaningful, and a story that my two-year-old enjoyed reading night after night.

Very Clever
A lone ice skater skates past leaving swirling lines on the ice. There are curls and tight spirals and loose curves that feel like music on the page. In her red hat and mittens, the ice skater fills the page with her patterns. Then she falls to the ground and suddenly the page is crumpled up by the artist in frustration. Unfolded again, the page is wrinkled and smudged. But soon more skaters are joining in and the crumpled page becomes a pond filled with people enjoying the ice. Lee once again creates a beautifully simple book that speaks to nature, beauty and quiet. The use of the pulling back and having the artist crumple the page breaks the fourth wall and then turns the picture book into something even more interesting and fresh. This picture book is beautifully designed and very clever. Appropriate for ages 3-5.
