Works better than expected
After much research I decided to go with this DRO with magnetic scales rather than optical scales. (Needed to custom fit scales to mill, and sizing the scales with this kit was simple and straightforward) As expected the time to fabricate brackets to hold the scales so they could be adjusted was considerable. I was able to use some of the provided angle brackets and had to fabricate others due to casting angles and such. Once everything was installed and the read heads were positioned as described in the instructions I was pleasantly surprised that the DRO head unit reported movement on all three axis once it completed its power on cycle. Setup of the +/- movement for each scale was easy as was the unit of resolution. (1us in my case) Once everything was calibrated a test against a .0005 scale dial indicator was encouraging. When I couldn’t get consistent results I became somewhat concerned but after a bit of research online I was able to setup a measurement test with 1-2-3 blocks that gave good results. In actual use to machine a small steam engine from castings and stock I was happy to find the DRO provided excellent results in setting reference points and then measuring work movements with expected accuracy. I have not used most of the special software functions save for locating points on a circle function which worked very well. (Much quicker than mounting, indexing and using a rotary table) I have not had any operational issues with the unit in six months of use and might just buy another one for my lathe.
