Does it make a difference whether I use all of the holes in my Berkey?
I think it does, and of course there is a cost to your decision; I use all of the cartridge holes. I have the Travel Berkey and the Royal. Even though I'm on city water, I don't trust the sources of the variety of places/states I go. Also, I'm a breeder and what my dogs drink is equally as important to me. I also have an artesian deep-well. 100% of the drinking water comes from the well, I do not use city water, and yes, I do use the white arsenic/flouride filters too. The water is crystal clean and it takes out all of the sulfur. Depending upon where you are getting your water geographically, you may get different results. I can easily get two years out of a set of these dual filters. The filters displace water, so the Royal only turns over 2 gallons at a time; less than what is advertised for this model, but that's OK with me. I make a 5-gallon bucket for the dogs availability at all times. Directions say to replace the white filters oftener than the black ones, but you don't have to. I recommend doing 2 things: 1) go to your county and get the information to have your water tested; costs about $20. They don't test for everything. 2) then go to your local pool company and tell them you want your pool water tested, which is usually filled by well water (deep or shallow/rock); if you say it's for a pool, they will give you a water test kit usually for free, because they think they can sell you their chemicals; they test for different stuff then the city. Compare the two, and you will get a general idea in how long you can get your filters to last, depending upon how clean your water is. TRICK: about once a year, every 6 months if you live in hot climate like FL and your unit is kept outside under a cover like my Royal is, you want to remove the black cartridges and scrub the outside of each one with a scrubby and reinsert. This cleans all of the invisible holes, and you can get an extra year of use out of the cartridges. Neat. If you think you have had them in the container too long, retest your water before you spend the money replacing these. Not getting around the expense, but I've seen too many bad reviews on trying to go cheaper, so I only use Berkey's products.

Great customer service from Berkey on isolating and fixing the problem after faling red-dye test. Excellent product.
I've used and loved my Berkey for years. Recently I added 2 more Black Berkey filters and replaced the white ones. I had not done the red-dye test and decided to do it. My unit failed. :( I called Berkey and got great customer service on what to do to find the problem. First, make sure the wing-nuts are tight and not loosening up after being tightened. I wasn't sure what that meant, but 3 tightened and stayed tight. The 4th filter was obviously loose. I tightened it, but as I did, it loosened. I tried several times and realized that it was a defective wing-nut. I had an extra one, replaced it, and that was fine. The Berkey representative also recommended putting a glass under each filter to determine which one was the problem. I was skeptical about that but...I did it anyway. That was amazing! Three of the glasses were CRYSTAL CLEAR. The other one was red from the red dye. Now that I've isolated the problem, I can fix it.

Great filters, but get the water level spigot
We've had our Berkey and bought these filters here on Amazon for years. I highly recommend them, HOWEVER - do yourself a favor and also buy the water level spigot here: https://amzn.to/2nNzKv8 -- The Berkey is easy to overfill, causing water to seep out of the edges - the spigot won't prevent over-filling, but it helps you know how much water is already in it so that you're less likely to overfill AND if it does overfill, it will drip only from the top of the spigot (which is easy to catch with a container underneath)

love my berkey system
First of I love my stainless steel berkey system. I did have to replace the white replacement filters a lot sooner than I thought. I wanted to have back up so I ordered this set which I thought was a great price for all of it.You know you have to change your filters when your water starts coming out very slowly. So I took out the white filters and ran water in it too make sure which set of filters was the problem as soon as I did that the water ran out fast. Once I replaced them it worked like new.

Purchased in April 2016, have not had good luck. OEM states they have a 5 year life. hahaha
I've replaced the fluoride filters as these don't last long. They work I guess but hang inside the bottom container where your filtered water is; if you fill the top container full, then these fluoride filters will sit in your drinking water on a Big Berkey. An after thought in design and a lot of weight on the threads of the black filters when you turn the top container over when cleaning. The black filters should last for 5 years. After about 2 years the threads stripped on one of the filters (you can't see the damaged thread but when you tighten the nut it is obvious). I read you can put Teflon tape on the threads and the nut might hold. I did that for the last year and that worked. Washed out the top container today. You have to remove the filters to clean it. When replacing the filters another black filter thread stripped again. Now that two down. For the price you pay, this should not happen. Berkey sells blocking plugs that seals a hole where a filter was. No problem stripping these threads as they are made correctly! Why doesn't Berkey make their filters to this same quality; they certainly charge enough for the filters to make them correctly.Would like Berkey to replace these filters but there was no button on Amazon's page to contact the vendor so maybe Berkey will see this. I'm calling Berkey tomorrow but from blogs on the Internet it seems that will be a waste of time.
