Not Bad But Not the Same
This product comes in Blu Ray and DVD, containing all 12 episodes. Available in both dubbed and subbed. The visuals from this season are notably different from prior season entries as it was animated by a different studio.I recommend to any anime consumer to purchase a physical copy of any and all anime franchises you enjoy. All western anime distributors deal with limited-licensing issues which makes future access to any one particular anime via digital media, problematic. Our protagonist continues in his efforts to subdue the wandering spirits, whose awesome powers can level an entire city on a whim. While meeting great success in placating the bulk of encountered spirits through dating, an opposing faction has become militarily active with hunting spirits for nefarious reasons. As new lore about the nature of spirits gets revealed through this conflict, the ever elusive Nightmare spirit continues in her efforts to hunt down and destroy the catalyst that set her on her destructive path. This season’s entry into the franchise suffers from a number of problems. There are TOO MANY characters for proper storytelling within the confines of 12 episodes. Powerhouse characters established in prior seasons have been relegated to minor combat roles and offshoot peanut gallery commentators to whatever situation arises. There needs to be more episodes per season to flush out interactions with all characters or characters need to start disappearing. Take an approach like “My Hero Academia” if character cramming is going to continue. This anime was created by a different studio with a different visual approach from prior seasons. Colors are darker/blander. The studio also toned down the physical appeal of the girls(Probably because of the West), Tohka’s size reduction being the obvious change. Why? It’s an ecchi/harem anime! The pupils in everyone’s eyes have been replaced with multi-colored shimmers typically seen in shoujo manga. Its oddly overused and creepy. They also use debatably poor CGI for combat scenes. Its very rare for an ecchi/harem franchise to get four seasons and a movie. The storytelling formula has changed quite a bite with this season’s entry. The silly hijinks and fanservice interactions between the male protagonist and cute girls are shifting towards more action and sinister plots yet to be revealed type of storytelling.I see this as a meh anime season.
