How deep is this really?

Mine is 2 3/4 inches deep and 5 3/4 wide at the inside cavity.

Some gray matter is coming off the inside of it when wiped, how do we clean this properly, and is it supposed to shed a little from the inside at first?

I never noticed that and I grind pure white frozen frankincense, and its hard and sharp edged, and I've never seen any grey. Dear, I think I'd scrub it with brillo and wash it again and again in very hot water, until I saw no grey. I'm wondering if it isn't a dye, if it is, you should get it out, it should come out with repeated washing and scrubbing. It might be granite bits, I just don't know. Sorry!

Dose it crush coarse Himalayan salt?

Don't know for sure. But it crushes crystal sea salt. peppercorns and cloves I use frequently and my guess it would just take additional elbow grease. It is very heavy, doesn't move on the counter, and the pestal is very easy to handle. I like it very much.

Where does this one ship from and is it really granite or is it that Molcajete?

I don't remember where it came from, but it is indeed real granite.
