Terrific memoir
One of the best musical memoirs I've read. Insightful and entertaining.

Hampton Hawes: straight shooter
This was a great read. The book is written in an informal, jazz-like, free-flowing style which (according to the author) mimicked Hawes's speaking style. Hamp didn't romanticize his heroin habit; he portrayed it honestly. And ultimately, he kicked, so this isn't a rise-and-fall narrative. The story is chockfull of amusing anecdotes about his adventures in the military, the New York and L.A. music scenes, and his pursuit of the fine art of jazz.I would recommend this book to anyone who is into the golden years of American jazz, the 50s and 60s.

Under appreciated Pianist, hip voicing
Well written in a stream of consciousness kind of monologue. Had only heard a bit of his late 50s recordings but amazed enough to pick up the book. Definitely underrated jazz piano master with a major drug problem, surprising I know. Just picked up a 4 disc discounted compilation of his recordings for a great price on Amazon. Highly recommend the music, and if you're into some personal travails and interactions with the major players in the scene of the times, the book is an easy and enjoyable read. Tough life though, for Mr Hampton Hawes

Quick and great read on a often forgot jazz GREAT!
This was a spectacular read on Jazz. Hawes deserves a much higher rank in the pantheon of great piano players. This is a really cool story.

Hampton Hawes Speaks His Mind and The Truth.
One of the most direct and frankest autobiographies.in music. Hampton Hawes pulls no punches in this book. It captures the personality of Mr. Hawes and the up and down Jazz life in a very idiomatic and conversational tone. You won't put this book down until you finish it...then you'll want to read it again!

For once, the real truth about a musician's life
This book has already been eulogised many times over – and rightly so.In the first person the late great Mr. Hawes tells us what life was (is?) really like for a working muso. Astonishingly honest and frank, you’ll probably get through this in one sitting.I had been looking for this for 10 years before it was finally reprinted, and it was worth the wait.

Niveau d'anglais requis : B2-C1. Le musicien se livre à nu. Aucune complaisance. Mais un sacré témoignage.
