Daft but very watchable monster romp
This isn't a scary horror film; so think of Rampage (with Dwayne Johnson and the giant alligator) more than, say, Alien. It's as much about a dysfunctional family as it is about the monster which grabs the little girl... and there' a lot of subtext about US interventions in Asia.It was South Korea's most financially successful movie. Made for washers (if the slightly wobbly SFX are anything to go by) but it dragged in gazillions at the box office. And in truth the CGI was no worse than some bits of Solo…Features plenty running and screaming, as you'd expect from a monster-runs-amok (well, monster-hops-amok, actually) movie; a dash of Asian slapstick at unexpected moments (tends to confuse western audiences); an adorable slavering beast; stacks of incidental anti-US sentiment (you’d think it was a remake of Godzilla…), and possibly the worst English subtitles of all time. The dialogue probably didn’t make much sense to start with, but rendered in white, on a white background, in a teeny-tiny font, it was 80% incomprehensible.A brilliant evening’s entertainment which I commend to you all.7/10ps: the Korean title translates as ‘Monster.’ Why is it called ‘The Host’?

Hilarious, enthralling and sad in equal measure.
This is one of my favourite foreign language movies and not just because I like horror and monster movies but because this one is so well done.Firstly, you have the family dynamic which to me seems perfectly balanced with them hating and loving one another with annoyance and anger, laughter and pain making this seem one of the more realistic family units of recent times. When a undersea monster kidnaps his daughter Hyun-seo, perennial underachiever and lifelong slacker Park Gang-du who runs a small snack business with his father realises he might lose the only thing he actually cares about and he springs into action while trying to evade the authorities and save her. With his father, sister and brother still bickering and fighting they set out to save Hyun-seo and receive a phone call from her letting them know she is alive and in a sewer system where she also tries to protect an even younger child Se-joo taken by the huge and utterly unique monster. To say anymore would be to ruin the wonderful surprises this film has in store for viewers, it is a wonderful South Korean movie with excellent special effects and marked the director out as one to watch in Bong Joon-ho, he also brought us the bonkers Snowpiercer and the excellent Parasite.Definitely one for those who do not care what language their entertainment comes in as long as it entertains, and boy does this film succeed wildly there.

Over hyped
There are are a lot of great reviews for this film so I may have had my expectations set too high - 'The Host' certainly has fantastic special effects and has good production values but I found the comedy elements overpowering resulting in a story that came across as rather silly. Considering the monster was killing large numbers of people and appeared to be responsible for transmitting a dangerous virus there seemed to be very little interest by world governments in capturing or killing it. And the only people up to the task were a very dysfunctional family whose collective skills (and plenty of luck) did the trick. It didn't help that the family weren't particularly interesting or likable. Also some severe editing might have helped bolster interest and improve the pacing by cutting 15 minutes or so off the extremely long 2 hour running time. The disk attributes are excellent - strikingly clear picture and excellent Korean PCM multi channel sound (although there are lots of different sound options you can choose from, including English dub). Not a film I would want to watch a second time.

CANNOT SEE SUBTITLES
The subtitles are tiny, in white so blend into the film, and don’t give you the option to make larger, change the colour, add a border or anything.Unless you are fluent in Korean do not buy this movie!!!I paid for this and was not able to even watch it

Meinungen beim Cannes-Filmfest=über 60 Minuten Laufzeit!*Fazit:ANRÜHREND UND INTELLIGENT!EINEN MONSTERFILM WIE THE HOST GAB ES NOCH NIE!!EIN FANTASTISCHER KOMMENTAR ZUR AKTUELLEN POLITIK!!ALIEN + GODZILLA= THE HOST!!Auf jeden Fall 5 abgefahrene, kultige, revolutionäre Sterne für diesen besonderen Film!
