Absolute must have for those who study the WWII Eastern Front campaigns
This is by far the most complete and detailed work on the Eastern Front campaigns of the Germans and Russian armies. Very logical build up and matching texts next to coloured maps with the movements of both armies. Sometimes overviews down to regimental and Kampfgruppe size. In the meantime, this book also proofs its value today with the war in Ukrain, as those same regions and cities have become once more the scenes of a dirty war.

Lovely book
Excellent quality book. Maps are colourful and an asset to anybody reading a book with poor quality maps (as in most of Glantz's books). Well presented with a brief history of each map alongside. and uses better quality paper. An excellent addition to my library.

An Essential Companion to Understanding the Eastern Front
If you are interested in studying the military aspects of the history of WWII on the Eastern Front and you are not already an expert on the subject, then this volume is indispensable. The purpose for buying this book is to support the reading of other more specialist or focused histories, I do not therefore judge it by the depth and accuracy of the text. Also this title is strictly about military operations not the broader political or economic issues. For years I have struggled with reading histories about this subject for one main reason, the paucity and often total lack of maps which most books on the subject suffer. Even when such authors provide maps they are usually very limited in coverage and just focused on one battle or campaign unlinked to others. This book, although it no doubt must contain some gaps, gives the most comprehensive coverage you are likely to find in one volume.I do not understand the complaints about the quality of production. The copy I received was quite luxurious in presentation. Being an Osprey book the quality of printing of the colour maps was in the same format and of a similar style to the overview maps given in Osprey series such as "Campaign". In other words excellent!Be warned that there are no battle detail maps though, these are all campaign scale maps.

Clear, illuminating and a brilliant companion to other books
A persistent issue with otherwise-great military histories is the quality of their maps. The requirements of publication often mean that we are left with little more than black lines connecting dots marked as towns to help visualise military operations. The shape of the ground is often lost. The Atlas of the Easter Front, then, is a superb companion to any military history book. The maps are large, colourful and clear, with virtually every military formation of significance marked, along with its movements. I have read it alongside Kirchubel's other book on Operation Barbarossa, and Beevor's Stalingrad, and it has given my a far greater understanding of both campaigns, and throws both operational decisions and command incompetence into even sharper relief when the consequences of these are shown on maps. Why only four stars? Occasionally Kirchubel's prose becomes oddly-written and distracting, and there is the occasional spelling mistake or editorial error: at one point he uses German terminology to describe the 62nd Army at Stalingrad. But it feels a shame to highlight these rather trivial problems. I would recommend it as a great supplement to anyone reading about the Eastern Front.

Excellent overview of eastern front battles
This book gives a good representation of the conflict on the Eastern front. Ideal for beginners looking for insight on the conflagration that was the Eastern front. Also good reference for war gamers as it give brief descriptions of the battles with maps and units involved. Great reference book.

Great Eastern Front Book
This ia a really great book if you are interested in the Eastern Front in WW2. As the title implies it is mostly maps with some accompanying text. The maps are good and many i have not seen before. I particularly like the way you can track individual units progress on some of the maps. Interesting read, good reference book and in my opinion equally good value.

amazing value
Not exactly as expected, as I thought the maps would have more details of towns, rivers etc. But such a beautiful book, in a case, that I had to give it 5 stars. Interesting account of battle movements. Great for the military enthusiast - I bought it to help me write a WW2 novel, so some of the detail was not required.

Superb addition
Superb addition to my collection of books on the Eastern Front , always good to be able to refer to an atlas when reading of battles which covered such a large area . The book itself is well produced , it is literally a big book & comes in a slip case .

Excellent Graphics
This book is a massive, excellent atlas of the Russo-German war. The maps and graphics are excellent, as one would expect from Osprey. The book makes some of the largest and most complex battles in history more understandable. You can ignore the OCD one star review. It would be humanly impossible to produce a work of this scale on such a complex subject without a few tiny errors.

Chapeau!

An essential companion to books on the Eastern Front.
In attempting to increase my knowledge of World War II's Eastern Front, I obtained a slightly used volume of John Erickson's "The Road to Stalingrad." As I got into this highly rated book, I found it basically unreadable as it had no maps. I have a need to place friendly and enemy units, cities, and land features in relation with each other in reading about campaigns and battles. Kirchubel's "Atlas of the Eastern Front" met this need admirably. The book contains 122 maps covering overviews, campaigns, and battles in some cases (e.g., Stalingrad) down to urban combat detail. Military units are clearly depicted, generally at the army, corps, and division level, and are depicted in color to quickly tell friend from foe. The atlas contains some narrative text to assist those readers unfamiliar with the Eastern Front . The book is well constructed, the maps lay flat, and it comes in a slipcase. It is a good compliment to those maps included in relevant history books. I recommend this atlas for anyone interested in the subject, and I am pleased that I bought mine.
