Doesn't fly as well
Dinotopia was one of the most beautifully illustrated and wonderfully creative books I have ever enjoyed. This perhaps, less so. For a completionist, then I guess you have to buy it, but the story is weaker ,the volume slimmer and the overall artwork is not as strong as the others. Worth buying now though, so you don't have to pay ridiculous e bay prices!!!

A huge let down
The other three volumes by James Gurney are beautiful on so many levels, beautiful stories, beautiful creatures leading peaceful and fulfilled lives. Somehow the other books manage to captivate both old and yet. This book, with one dimensional characters and uninspiring stories seems aimed at the under 5s. Many of the characters look like things you would find in a McDonald happy meal.

Not a wide in scope or imagination as the rest of the series, but with background detail about Dinotopian history
I'm a big fan of the Dinotopia franchise, but as it is based in america it can be hard keeping up with it. I recently discovered the novel series and this book. I read it eagerly, but it didn't take very long, and there isn't many separate locations. The story is based before the rest of the series, and follows a young man who is brought up in Poseidos, a 'modern' civilisation of mechanical dinosaurs on an island to the East. The larger pictures of there are fascinating, but most are too restricted in their subjects to be overly interesting. The man learns of an invasion plot and breaks away to the mainland. Again some larger pictures have details worth examining but most are merely illustrating individual scenes. After the story, about half the book is taken up with bonus material, including an additional story, then some pictures of element design for Poseidos which was interesting and included storyboards and preliminary pictures which show how much work goes into the books, then a good series of notes, detailing major civilisations on the islands, major locations and major characters. It is nice to see it summarised, but there was little extra above what you would know already if you are familiar with the series. As the previous reviewer said, good for a completist

Beautiful book.
I had all of the other book in this series except this one. I'm so happy I found it in a new condition. The pictures are really artworks. I wish they reprint the posters too.

Bellissimo! inglese facile e disegni stupendi
