Nine CD set. Robert Palmer was one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the late 20th Century. An artist and writer who sampled world-wide success, he never stopped being a music fan first and foremost, often racing to record something he'd just heard a snatch of on the radio or had caught in a club. His astute mixture of originals and well-selected covers gave him a song palette at times so eclectic that he became impossible to pigeonhole. In many respects, Palmer was the invisible man of pop. His close friends Talking Heads once recorded a track called Seen And Not Seen, the title of which sums up Palmer perfectly. After spells with The Alan Bown! And Dada, and three albums with Vinegar Joe, Island Records signed Robert Palmer to a solo deal in 1973. This 109 track, 9 CD book set contains all nine albums that he recorded for Island Records, between 1974 and 1985, alongside b sides, demos and alternate takes. Aside from the worldwide hit "Addicted To Love", the set also contains "Johnny And Mary", "Bad Case Of Lovin' You (Doctor Doctor)", "Looking For Clues", "Some Guys Have All The Luck" and many more hits, as well as collaborations with Gary Numan. The musicians include The Meters, Little Feat, and the Brecker Brothers and the producers include Tom Moulton and Chic's Bernard Edwards. The 28 page 12x12 booklet contains the album lyrics and credits, along with extensive annotation by Daryl Easlea. The set has been newly mastered by Phil Kinrade at AIR Mastering using digital sources provided by the Universal archive.

If you’re a fan of Robert Palmer’s early career stuff
Then you’ll enjoy this CD set. Great songs and the extensive story about his career is interesting. I saw him perform twice in Toronto in the eighties. He couldn’t dance, but his singing was amazing. I worked with a guy who knew Palmer when he played in Dada and Vinegar Joe, so the notes about his eclectic musical pursuits were a great insight into his past and artistic brilliance. Nine CDs in the set and I regularly play all of them.

Robert Palmer
Some might applaude Island records, myself included, for not cashing in on the untimely demise of Robert Palmer by releasing repackaged material to cash in on his death. On the other hand some might be critical, myself included, for ignoring such an important artist by not producing a box set of remastered CD's for far too many years. However ten years after RP's death along come Edsel Records who have done just that, releasing an excellent box set of the nine remastered albums RP recorded when he was contracted to Island. The box set come as a 12"×12" 'book' containing all album lyrics & a biography of RP's life & career.A must for those who followed RB's recording career with Vinegar Joe, his solo works & The Power Station. RP was not just the creater of many great songs he also had a knack of choosing great songs to cover, written by the likes of Allen Tousaint, Lowell George, Andy Fraser & Lennon/McCartney.Whilst recording he employed as session musicians members of The Meteors, Little Feat & Motown session musicians. He was an acknowledged creative music arranger.OK some of the LP artwork on the earlier albums are undoubtedly sexist by todays standards but remember it was the 1970's when attitudes were different, but this should not detract from the music contained in this box set, most of which have stood the test of time. The inclusion of additional bonus tracks are welcome.Highly recommended. Here's hoping the other record labels Robert Palmer signed to release remastered albums sooner than later.

Well worth exploring
Before buying this I only had Robert Palmer compilations. Now I have a large number of his albums which are well worth having. There are a fair few additional tracks most of which are well worth having. All in all a reasonable price to pay for what get.
