It is not portable it needs be on pluged in all of the time as being it size

will this let me connect my mp3 player via a usb cable?

Yes it does. It can also pair with iPhone and Androids via Bluetooth and NFC connectivity. However the usb is not compatible for iPhones hence Bluetooth is recommended. The sound driver enhances the audio quality for Bluetooth connected devices. I have connected my phone for charging from the speaker and does a good job.
