A good dog head collar must also be comfortable!
My puppy Lab Rtriever is growing up fast and has now become strong on the lead! I decided to research online information of dog head collars. Some opinions stated that these collars are cruel and dismiss them, whilst many more consider them a valuable contribution to improving the control and reduced hard pulling when on the lead. Further, I talked to fellow dog walkers, and they all agreed that the dog head collar is well worth having. So armed this this information I looked online to choose one. Eventually I decided on the Halti Optifit Headcollar. The additional feature of an adjustable head strap seemed the best choice for me as size measurements taken from a supplier may sometimes be questionable. Delivery took 2 weeks due to being out of stock but that’s hardly Amazon’s fault. The head collar is fairly light with strong flat material. Some reviews have commentated that it looks flimsy and has easily been chewed through by even small dogs and puppies. I feel this statement is a tad unfair as it clearly states on the instruction not to leave your dog unattended with the headcollar on to avoid damage by chewing! (see attached image). Imo, the Halti dog collar is well made, and the flat tape design is deliberate so that it fits the dog’s nose more closely with less hindrance to the dog’s line of sight. The adjustable locking padded nose strap offers better fitting around the nose with two fingers slack for mouth movement then locked in position Imo, this lighter and slimmer headcollar makes for a more comfortable fit for your dog. There are many different makes of head collars on the market at present and all have their virtues and faults depending on your point of view. For me, this type offers what I'm looking for and only time will tell if lives up to my expectations. I already have a Halti 2-clip training lead - so every bit helps!

Can cause injury
I got this as it offers more control of my Springer. It is a great muzzel however the securing clip under the jaw is a hazard. My dog managed to get her paw stuck in it twice so had to remove it. I did however manage to secure the muzzel to the coller using an old velcro strap I had. Now it works well and no problems with potential injury. The muzzel is easy to use and put on with a little training.

HALTI Optifit headcoller. An absolute game changer!
This has been an absolute game changer for me. I have 1 staffy and 1 staffy x american bulldog. I wasn't able to walk them together as I wasn't in control. With these I am now able to walk them both together with confidence and the pulling has stopped! Don't get me wrong they are still getting used to them but the difference it has made has been life changing for me. I would definitely recommend them for anyone struggling with pulling and lunging as mine did.

Will slip off with backwards pressure
While this headcollar looked to be good quality, it was effectively useless because it will slip off if the dog pulls backwards. I always use headcollars so I can confirm that it had been fitted properly. I like the idea of the connection to the dog's collar though. Gave an extra star for that.

Not impressed
RUBBISH, After second use only and not excessive strain it broke apart, luckily the safety was still attached to the main lead or it it could have resulted in a dead dog under a ten ton truck.

Slows down pulling
Brilliant, my dog hates having to wear this but it's a god send for me as it stop her pulling as much as without it.

We have a Small Munsterlander, similar to a German Shorthaired Pointer. He is very smart, very energetic, and is hard to contain on a short leash. We have done lots of hunting dog training with him, he works really well in the field, but is challenged by having to stay so close to us on a leash. We have previously tried traditional leashes, slip leashes, a shoulder harness, and a "figure 8" leash. None of them worked, and yet we know our dog is trainable. I knew that we needed a leash that would put some pressure on his face as a deterrent, but I didn't want to hurt him, and didn't want to sue a choke chain. The Halti changed the way our dog walked in ONE DAY! I took some time to fit him correctly in it, it slips over his snout, and then clasps high on his head behind his ears. It is adjusted under his chin to ensure that it is secure, but NOT tight or uncomfortable. I gave him a treat at this point. He can eat, drink, and act completely normally while he wears it. When it is time to walk him, a traditional leash clips onto a hook under his chin, not around his neck. Immediately, when the dog started pulling forward, the leash forced his head to turn, because it is clipped directly under his chin. It isn't painful for him, and it doesn't create any pressure, it just makes his head turn left. He immediately felt this was annoying enough not to repeat. Again, it is not PAIN that is making him stop, it's annoyance. There is no benefit to tugging harder rather than lighter. Now that he is used to the leash, he does sometimes forget his composure and start to pull forward again, sometimes walking with tension in the leash (but not nearly as much tension as every other leash we tried, where my hands would be raw after a walk!). I don't want him to get used to this, so I give a quick flick/tug on the leash so that his head turns, and he remembers how much he hates doing that. On particularly bad instances, for example seeing a squirrel, when he lunges forward, the leash turns his head so fast that he ends up turning around. Again, this is really annoying for him, so he doesn't want to repeat that behavior. Altogether, he now gets MORE walks, MORE treats, and spends less time panting from pulling so hard. I strongly feel there is NO PAIN for either of us when we walk with the Halti. THANK YOU HALTI!
