The Flavour Thesaurus: More Flavours: Plant-led Pairings, Recipes and Ideas for Cooks

A wonderful wonderful book
I bought this book a few months ago, but only just got around to having a read of it. It is sublime. There is so much factual information contained within it, but written in the most wonderful way. I can open it on any page, read a few lines, and I am salivating, with an urgent desire to get the pots and pans out. Very very inspiring book. Although it’s a ‘thesaurus’ I could sit down and read it from beginning to end quite happily.

Great book if you’re new to experimenting with food
I will start by saying I won’t be returning this book.My initial caveat - which is not mentioned anywhere in the blurb, and why I took a chance on this book - is there is no meat.I would have sent it straight back if it wasn’t a true “plant-based companion”.I like that it’s compact. And has plenty fun food pairings. There’s lots of commentary. And a poem on page 151.This book is more something to read on a train commute to encourage experimentation, than a comprehensive flavour pairing guide. It’s by no means complete.Food basics such as coriander, nori, rhubarb and shallots don’t feature.I was hoping it would be an improvement on my current Go-To guide by Karen Page. It’s not.

As good as the first.
I loved the first book and often gift it to my food students. This sequel does not disappoint, more wonderful ideas for flavour combinations. I use this in GCSE food and nutrition lessons to encourage more creativity in students.

Great adjunct to the first book, but get that one first.
The stunning follow-up to the first Flavour Thesaurus, this doesn’t disappoint. Those familiar with the original will enjoy this latest instalment of creative pairings, and those who aren’t would be well advised to buy both: as some reviews have said, there are obvious flavours missing in this book, but that’s because they were already covered in the first one. These books are the perfect way to banish boredom from your cooking. It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut of the same old flavours when you’re juggling work, kids and other commitments. Dipping into this on your commute or over your morning coffee gives new inspiration, and it’s made my cooking less of a chore and a lot more fun.
