It's just plastic.I put one weight on from workout equipment

How long does the batteries last?

I bought mine in May 2018; batteries still OK; remember LEDs require very little power; should last years; best thing I ever did for my wife & my garage.

How durable is the material of the sign in a tropical climate?

I don’t think tropical climate would bother it it’s all plastic. The only issue is the base is extremely late I had to add a 2 pound weight to keep it from being knocked over.
