I spent a LOT of time researching 40L travel backpacks before landing on this one. It's a great deal compared to similar backpacks/duffels, especially during sales. I can easily pack 4-5 days worth of clothes and toiletries in here. It's big, but I've never been asked to check this bag and it fits comfortably into overhead compartments on all of the major airlines. It's comfortable, sturdy, attractive (I've had people ask me where I got it), and most of all - it's functional. It doesn't have a ton of pockets, but it's a duffel-backpack hybrid. If you want lots of pockets, this won't deliver. But it has an absolutely CAVERNOUS main compartment that will hold more than you can imagine. It folds fairly flat for storage, which is nice. It's easily cleaned - I had a minor toiletry spill one time and you can't even tell. The bag itself is a bit heavy when empty, but they've invested a lot into comfortable straps and quality materials, so it's a worthwhile tradeoff for me. These pictures were taken today, more than one year after I bought it and 20+ trips later. I don't write a ton of reviews but when packing this bag today, I was struck by how happy I am with my purchase!

At the time I was looking at this and the MATEIN backpack. The MATEIN seemed decent, as it was more than half the price. But I am so glad I went with this TomToc Travel backpack. I travel with my LG gram 17 inch laptop and it protected that beautifully. It had more than enough space for a few days’ worth of clothing. I really liked the placement of the zippers and the quality of the zippers as well as the quality of the bag itself. It has a nice nice thick material good padding and very clever placement of pockets and handles. I really had a hard time spending this much money on a travel backpack but I am so glad to not spend more on one. This backpack is excellent value for the money and very sturdy. I am sure you get what you pay for with the $300 and $400 backpacks but for somebody on a budget (but not a MATEIN super low budget, lol) this was perfect for my needs. I kept my passport and wallet in the top pocket just below the top handle. So no matter how much I stuffed my backpack my passport was always with an easy reach and never at risk of being bent or damaged even when the backpack was stuffed to the limit.

Super happy with this bag! I ordered and returned 2 others 2x the price before landing on this one. It’s deceptively roomy at 40L capacity and very rugged with strong zippers and clasps. I just used it for a 3-night business trip and it was more than enough while being lightweight, well padded and easy to stow away under an airplane seat or in the overhead compartment. I chose Tomtoc over Nomatic, Osprey and Tmbuk2… all with similar options yet much pricier. My only reason for giving 4/5 is the absence of a side handle to carry horizontally when needed.

Bought this to substitute a hard case carryon for a week-long trip to the UK to visit friends. I didn’t want to deal with checking in bags, and wasn’t planning on buying much to bring back. Was able to pack a spare pants, a couple shirts, and everything else I needed for my trip. Dual cupholders were clutch while in commute. I like the main compartment is zippered so everything doesn’t come falling out when you just need to get access to the inner netted pocket. I do like the top zippered pocket but which there was another somewhere. Bag is durable, strong, and comfortable. Fits a cased SteamDeck in the main comportment if that matters to any gamers reading this.

Needed a new smaller carry on backpack to use in place of my Nomatic Travel Bag since I’m also using a roller carry on. This backpack is the perfect size for that and has just enough features. The quality is top notch. Not some basic Temu/Shein bag. Packaging is great. Comes in a branded box enclosed in a branded bag with tags attached. I would totally give this as a gift and be delighted if I was gifted one.I like the 2 exterior zipper pockets that I can use to stash my passport and boarding pass as I go through TSA or stash small snacks for easy access if the bag is under the seat in front of me. Love that the YKK zipper opening is u shaped vs just straight across the top for a wider opening. The laptop/iPad/tech zipper compartment is nicely placed so it sits against your back and has its own zipper (with ability to use a travel lock) so you can breeze through TSA. Trolly strap is a must and this one is sturdy. The straps are shaped well and are very comfortable. There is a chest strap. Carry handles on top and side. The padded back allows for comfort and ventilation. The only miss for me was that the main compartment lacks the same style lockable style zipper pulls as the tech compartment. It’s still possible to lock the pulls together but since you can access the tech compartment from the main U zipper compartment, this seems like an oversight. However, this is still the best bag I could have bought that wasn’t $200+.
