An ideal reference guide
It's a compact refresher guide for boating captains, navigators and deck hands. It's extremely concise, clear and well illustrated with lots of examples. It's small, takes little space on the shelves, very easy to carry around. The colour coded pages aid in finding what you need quickly.Do not confuse this as a starter's guide, though. Nothing replaces proper boating/sailing education and full manuals. This book covers the essentials and serves as an aid in those rare moments when one forgets the little, less obvious things. Keep in mind this is mostly for british waterways, but does make frequent reference to American standards (when it applies, often they're the same).

I am a member of the National Coastwatch Institute. This is a Charity that works physically with the Coastguard and RNLI! We are all volunteers and fund ourselves. This book is bit of a Bible for us and obviously for all your Skippers out there. Buy it

Reeds Skippers Handbook, very comprehensive.
I bought this book as a means to learn about sailing and whats involved, i have developed a keen interest in the sailboat and people who have sailed not only across the Atlantic Ocean but circumnavigated the world, sometimes single handedly, i had loads of questions and this book seems to be not only answering my questions but covering aspects that i had not yet thought of, a bit mind boggling at times but i,'m very pleased i bought it, for guidance or just interested in sailing its a great read.

Great little guide
Love this book as a companion to pop into my back when going sailing. Not in the deepest of detail for all chapters but in plenty enough for me and whilst out at sea. I have used this alongside the sailing bible and RYA day skipper official handbooks to get through the theory of the course with no problem (with lots of enthusiasm too!). Probably not recommended by all but didn't do a theory course alongside my practical but taught myself instead as I'm a student and didn't have £400ish to spare for the theory on top of the practical course.

Standard issue
I issue this little handbook to all my students. It has all the detail they need up to Yachtmaster theory (except that the description of the calculation of tidal times and heights for Secondary ports is a bit vague).
