They turn the transmitters on. Be sure to install the batteries inside first.

Q: How is this unit holding up for you guys because it feels very cheap?

Very reliable we us it several times a week with no problems. We take care when using it during connection and disconnect.

Q: What is the frequency response of the transmitter or microphone?

I connected a vintage Hewlett Packard audio oscillator to a speaker. Then I clipped the Steelman's transmitter pickup to the speaker's frame. Sweeping the audio oscillator through its range, I could hear (through headphones) on the Steelman receiver the audio output of a range of about 300hz to 3,000hz.
