After I looked at the price of the hand tool and the cost of more grommets, I realized what a great deal this kit was. What I didn't realize is that the "jaws" in which you place the pieces prior to attaching them is that they're magnetic, so the grommet pieces stay in place while you're placing them in the position to apply them. This made the whole process a cinch. I used the hand punch before placing them due to applying them to a heavy double-thick edge of a tarp, but when I had to add more grommets to a single thickness, it worked well without pre-punching the holes, since the tarp was already hung in place.
