Excellent Spiral Notebook for Heavy Duty Use AND for Fountain Pen Users!
I've been hunting for either a A4 or Letter (or equivalent) sized ruled notebook mainly for fountain pen use. I've been using Five Star 1 subject notebooks for a while, but their quality has been slowly going downhill. Every other page, the toothing is in the opposite direction, or the fibers are different. Very annoying. One sheet could be good, and the next 3 might be horrible. In any event, I prefer Rhodia, the paper is nice, but the notebook construction is less than desirable. Also, there is no margins in the Rhodia. I also tried the Clairefontaine Classic, but it's construction wasn't too much better. The paper was OK, but not like the Rhodia. I also tried a Maruman Mnemosyne N199 A4, and for it's price it wasn't worth it. I didn't like how the top of the pages were setup, nor was the construction much better. This Black n' Red notebook is in a different league. The paper feels just like the Rhodia (maybe between the Rhodia and the Clairefontaine Classic, but more towards the Rhodia), but it's got the ruling and the lines setup just right. Similar to the Five Star notebooks. It also absorbs the ink without feathering, and it makes even my wettest ink dry rapidly. The price is great! Cheaper than the others I tried (with the exception of the Five Star). As for what I usually use to write in the notebooks: TWSBI ECO, Parker Jotter, VAC700R, Lamy Al-Star, occasionally my Jinhao X750 with a custom Goulet gold nib. They are all medium nibs, and all using Noodler's EEL Black.Right now I'm finishing up my last few pages in my Five Star, and I'll report back if I notice anything weird or different that messing around on the first page as a test page. But for now, the notebook is the best I've used.

Best
best option that I have tried when it comes to being fountain pen friendly. The characteristics that we look for are all there. No feathering, no bleed-through, and best of all you can still see the full depth of the ink, such as shading and sheen. Dry time is comparable to a paper such as Rhodia, but still manageable. For a price well below that of premium paper, you can’t go wrong. If you are into fountain pens and don’t want to spend $20 (or more) on a notebook, you should definitely check this brand out. They perform well and are affordable. What more could you ask for? They even look great with their black and red trim (hence the brand name). Black n’ Red notebooks all use the same 90 gsm (24 lb) paper and their website clearly touts that it’s fountain pen friendly. In my experience, this paper is extremely fountain pen friendly and even holds up to doodling with a Sharpie Pen. I expected some sort of bleed through when scribbling shapes with my red pen but the 24lb paper was up to the challenge and the other side was blemish free. Some people don’t like smooth paper and prefer a little feedback. I’ve always been of the opinion that the Black n’ Red was an incredibly smooth paper and while that’s true, it’s not as smooth as Clairefontaine. If you use Rhodia notebooks and feel the paper is a tiny bit too smooth, perhaps Black n’ Red will provide what you want.

Perfect Notebook in Every Way!

I love this notebook
I love this notebook. I bought it on a whim at Wal-Mart because I was going to training and needed one. There are so many good things.1) Price. The price is right. Very affordable compared to Moleskin notebooks of a similar type which could easily go for $10 each.2) Size. Many notebooks I find are just a little too big or a little too small. This is a great balance between having a substantial writing surface, while being small enough to fit in a jacket pocket or possible a pants pocket.3) Paper quality. The paper is think enough that there will be no bleed through even if using a wet pen type (like a Pilot G2 or something similar). At the same time the paper is so smooth that using a ballpoint pen feels easy and natural.4) the cover, one of my main fears when getting a spiral notebook is that the cover is going to be flimsy, become damaged and not protect the pages. The cover on this notebook is excellent. It's a strong hard cover, but also flexible.5) the spiral binding. Many cheap spiral notebooks have binding that makes turning the pages a pain, not with this one. So easy to use.

Works well with gel pens
This is a nice spiral bound notebook. The pages fold very smoothly unlike the regular spiral notebooks. The paper is also much brighter which helps with contrast. Works well with gel pens of all colors (no bleed/see through). Expensive for a notebook compared with the usual ones, but good for special purpose use. Haven't used it extensively to comment on durability, but seems like it will hold up well since it has a plastic cover. It's not as sturdy as their hardbound version. I would buy this again.

Quality paper suitable for fountain pens
Finally a decent quality, medium sized note book. The cover is a durable stiff plastic material bound by double rings and held closed by an elastic riveted to the back cover. The paper is top quality, heavy weight, bright white that is perfect for fountain pen use. I noticed no bleed-through or feathering; the bane of fountain ink. The only downfall would be that it is limited to 70 pages. I would have expected more for the price. But that said, I will probably buy it again.

Algo cara pero linda
Linda, algo cara pero funcional. A mi esposo le encantó por la buena calidad de papel y los colores. Lástima que son pocas hojas.

Highly recommend this to any students -- the tear away pages ...
I cannot go back to regular notebooks as I am purely a pen user. I didn't know a notebook with thicker paper would help with bleeding and neatness. I am by no means an enthusiast in writing, penmanship, or calligraphy but this does the job for everyday notes. The quality for the price makes this a 5-star value.Highly recommend this to any students -- the tear away pages make it easy to create study guides!
