Stephen King's IT [Blu-ray] [1990]

This blu-ray is a stunning HD master with vivid colour and excellent black levels that ensure even the darkest scenes are clear and discernible. Pennywise bursts from the screen with tremendous force and this new transfer does full justice to Tim Curry's impressive performance. Detail is excellent too as the TV series was shot on 35 mm and looks as if it was produced yesterday with the only giveaway being its 1.33:1 aspect ratio. That said it is infinitely better than the full-screen low definition version released originally on DVD. Sound quality is first rate too and ensures quite an impressive sound field for such an old production. "IT" is unquestionably one of the better Stephen King adaptations and this new transfer is rather better than the new "Salem's Lot" blu ray available in Germany and soon to be released in the UK. "IT" is a clever and quite original story that contains many memorable and horrific moments while also maintaining a warm affection for a lost America of the author's childhood. As with "Salem's Lot" a writer returns to his hometown and the shadowy memories of something terrible that that occurred many years ago - events that are beginning to emerge from the darkness yet again. Chilling and enjoyable Hallowe'en fare that runs for just over 3 hours as a single, repurposed, film rather than the original two episode TV special. It's difficult to imagine that the new version, due for release in 2017 will come up to the standard of this TV special - particularly when one hears of its current production problems and the loss of key actors and it's first director. This blu ray however is highly recommended although it can never compete with the power and complexity of King's original novel of course.

Another great chiller from the pen of steph en King. Like SALEMS LOT before it this also a made for TV movie and it does contain so me scary scenes (not recommended for you nger people). The acting is first rate especial ly from Tim Curry as the evil clown PENNY WISE known as IT of the title. If you scare e asily then avoid if however, you like a good scare then I will say watch it and see what y ou think. Enjoy.

I give this 5 starts because of the picture quality and the price of the Blu-ray love the film but it's probably more a 4/5. I would say Id have preferred a Special Edition with some deleted scenes or TV spots so and so forth and would have happily paid for it. As a bare bones Blu-Ray its priced well and the picture quality is brilliant considering its age and the commentary track is interesting. Sadly it in the old aspect ratio so be prepared for a square experience if your watching this on a TV made passed 1999 its gonna have some big old side bars. As for the movie I watched it as a youngster and it scared the hell out of me, it's still creepy and Tim curry steals the show the second half is somewhat problematic (the bloody spider) but its still a classic of it's time. I believe Mr King is still somewhat to blame for this current Clown Craze and this Blu-ray reissue is timely.

This is a movie that scared the hell out of me in my childhood. I remember sneaking my TV back on after I had been sent to bed and watching this over two nights on TV. I was terrified but totally engrossed at the same time. This dvd is also split into two parts. Part one is mainly about a group of kids (The Lucky Seven) who have to face "IT" and work together to try and kill him. Part two is about The Lucky Seven finding out that "IT" is back, and having to return to their old town to finish what they started as children and kill "IT" once and for all. One thing I have to say is that part one is much better than part two. The chemistry and performances of the children in part one are comparable to that of Stand By Me. You really get to see the strength of the group. Individually they are just children and are weak but together they are strong. The children (a young Seth Green, Emily Perkins, and the late Jonathan Brandis among them) in my opinion do a much better job than the adults. Although the adults do not do that bad. The adults include Richard Thomas, John Ritter, Annette O'Toole. The most impressive performance in the movie is of coarse Tim Curry as Pennywise The Clown (IT). This was a truly terrifying performance and the source of my fear as a child. I would give 5* for part one, and 3* for part two. I do have a slight moan about the picture aspect ratio. As this movie was made for TV the picture looks squashed and you can tell the makers must of had big issues trying to fit all of The Lucky Seven on screen at the same time. They seemed to have tried to get round this by making them stand or sit unnaturally close to each other. The special features for this disc has a audio commentary from the director and some of the adult cast. My favourite part of this is when John Ritter is talking about Seth Green saying that he has not been in anything since this movie. (Everyone loves taking cheap shots at Seth Green it appears!). Overall this is a very good and scary Tv movie.

AHAAAAHHH! Nope it doesn't finish halfway through... IT'S A DOUBLE SIDED DVD! You have to turn it over to play the other half of the film. I discovered this last night after feeling the same 'cheated' sensation! However... I do still feel a little cheated, as even though I have now discovered that I don't just have half the film, I have to get up and turn it over half way through which severely annoys me!!! Why they have done this I do not know. Idiots - Lord of the Rings managed something like 3hrs of film plus normal menu stuff on ONE DVD. You may have noticed the distinct lack of warning about this feature when buying this product from Amazon. If there IS a note about it, it's very NOT obvious! I'm sure on the case in very small print it probably says so... But only my boyfriend figured out it was double sided after it halted half way through the film (which incidently, I like, but I don't read SKs books) because it had no picture on the top side - it was shiney. Double-sided = twice as likely to get one half of the film scratched, dirty, or otherwise made unreadable. Most dissapointing - would not have bought it if I'd have known!

If you’ve ever read the book by Stephen King himself, or seen either one of the reboot movies then all I can promise is, while this is vaguely a watchable movie, this isn’t quite as entertaining, gripping, or as even remotely scary as what’s just been released in the cinema. First of all, let me point out that this was a three part mini series on (if I recall correctly from childhood) Sky one many decades ago. The original makers of this, had intended to make this a ten part series - then it got whittled to six, then somehow, they lost a few directors, it got many rewrites and it was pushed into a minimum of a three hour slot to completion. As you can imagine, there is a LOT of content missing, scenes watered down or completely removed so you get something of a disjointed story that is unfulfilling and rushed. Scenes are disjointed, important storylines glossed over, parts missing entirely, important parts rushed and missing the scare factors. I felt like this film was really unnecessarily made, and as I understand it, Stephen King wasn’t happy with this adaptation of his story and I can completely understand why. Unlike the recent adaptation, the one thing they absolutely stayed true (surprisingly) to is that the story jumps back and forth between timelines (which in the book was the 1950s and the 1980s) so it stands out very different from ‘It: Chapter One’ and ‘It: Chapter Two’ (which separates both timelines and puts the story in sequence of the events as they occurred which honestly, made it easier to follow). The childhood actors of the story did their jobs far better than the adults, I have to admit - Jonathan Brandis (now sadly departed) and Emily Perkins (great actress, very underrated) who played younger Bill Denbrough and Beverley Marsh were far more convincing and sympathetic than their adult counterparts and young Richie Tozier (played by Seth Green) was far more likeable and showed far more personality than his ‘present day’ actor as well who was immediately forgettable. Richard Thomas was just horrible as Bill, it was like watching John-Boy Walton in an odd timeslip and being a horror movie protagonist (didn’t work for me). A lot of the characters were highly rewritten so we lost the real essence of their personalities and strengths which really dictated a lot of how the story went in the book (more attention was given to the reboot/remakes though at least). What really bothered me though is that although this was a horror movie, a hell of a lot of the horror was really missing. Other than a few ‘blood splatter’ effects, I can’t say there was anything very much scary about this. And for people who ever thought Tim Curry as Pennywise was terrifying...they likely won’t be able to handle Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of the same character at all (you want creepy, he’ll give you creepy and terrifying). Putting sharp teeth and orange contacts in the face of a clown doesn’t do a hell of a lot to add to the terror aspect with Curry, he was just more ‘silly’ than scary if that makes sense. There isn’t really any on screen violence to be scared of - you won’t see the death scenes of the children, everything is ‘implied’ (which I guess is because this aired on television the filmmakers were warned against graphic violence against children and had cut the showing of dead children). The final confrontation with ‘It’ was just unbelievably bad and unsatisfying. It felt all so rushed it really left me feeling so badly cheated of a proper ending. I’d say if you’ve never read the book, this might be worth a watch - especially if you haven’t actually seen the newer adaptation and want a watered down version of the story. If you’ve seen the modern adaptation and read the book, I’d probably just recommend not bothering unless you’re a Stephen King film collector or fan and ‘have to have it’. It’s rare we get to really say this in this day and age of terrible reboot movies but the modern adaptation is far, FAR, better and more true to the essence of King’s book. This is a watered down half-hearted adaptation that was whittled down and condensed far too much and it really disappointed me, especially on the rewatch.

Fantastic miniseries! Even being made for TV and having a budget that goes with it, what the filmmakers managed to do is fantastic: well acted (yes, even the kids), moody, with plenty of nightmare fuel. The disc quality is superb, with an image that scales well to a 4K screen, good stereo sound. Sadly, no extras. If there's one point against it, is that there's no way to watch it as originally aired on TV, and in the meantime loses a couple of minutes from the original runtime.

Ammetto che il costo potrebbe essere un pelo sopra la media per la qualità finale della cofezione. Molti lamentano che 20 euro son troppi per una confezione di solo cartone, senza all'interno NIENTE, nessun libretto ma solo il Blue Ray. Vero! Il punto è che se ami il film o sei collezionista, certi feticci non hanno proprio un prezzo.. nel mio caso 20 euro è una cifra accettabile per un film che amo, e che riguardo sempre volentieri, in questo formato retrò che ricrea una vecchia VHS.. geniale. Unica nota dolente, o comunque da considerare, è che chiaramente avendo un formato diverso spicca fra tutti i cofanetti per altezza, ergo capita subito all' occhio e non in tutte le librerie o porta dvd/ blue ray può starci.. giustamente!
