Q: Is the hessian already hemmed? How easy is his for a 7 year old to use? Can I buy a spare tool ?

No the hessian isn't already hemmed but very easy to do. Just fold over on edges and work through two layers of hessian when pulling material through. I am not sure a 7 year old child would find this easy to do .A spare tool can be purchased. It is a relaxing hobby to do.

I made mine a number of years ago using cheap throws. I have washed it in a washing machine lots of times and it’s fine, just make sure you buns the age so it doesn’t fray..

Hi, thanks for your enquiry. The secret to making a durable rag rug is to pack the bits of cloth tightly together, in the weave of the hessian backcloth, as this means each will be firmly gripped and the ends will stand up close together. Therefore cats claws, or puppies teeth, will catch more than one end and the bits of cloth will support each other. Well made rag rugs are so durable there are still some made in Victorian times in usable condition. If in any doubt a handy tip is to make the rug using thick cloth which will really fill the backcloth weave as tightly as possible. Hope this is helpful.
