Does the point come with 'fish plates'?

From what i remember it comes with 3.. And assumes the track it's connecting to has the opposite fishplate attached.. So if your curves/straights you're connecting have none then you'll need to purchase some extras.

I am looking to purchase this for my sons Hornby Santa Express set to extend the track, is it comparable and will the train operate on it ?

Yes it is okay for you to use , R8073 point right hand and R8072 is left hand. just make sure the electric feed to the track is in the correct position. I.E TO THE END BY THE PLASTIC LEVER .If it wasn't t he branch off piece would not have power to the rail which meant the loco would come to a stop. Hope that helps you. RW

Do i Need a Separate control for points section Id so wgere do i get one

We manage the points manually, so you'd be best off asking in a hobby shop. You can get electronic points controls, but they sometimes only work sporadically.
