Can it be plugged directly to my computer? Would I be able to see my live recording while using Audacity?

No, these units are analogue mixers, to record into the PC you'll need to send the outputs into a seperate audio interface (usb/FireWire/or even into your built in soundcard mic input). I think there is a UX (?) model of these mixers that do have built in interfaces but they're obviously a bit dearer and will only send the stereo output of all mixer inputs into the PC but that might suit your needs!

Is this a suitable mixer for a small, computer based recording studio?

I bought this for my 14 year old sons small studio for live recording. A multi channel audio interface would of worked just as well. I have a mic, guitar, monitors and machine mk3 plugged into it. All he needs now is for his voice to break, he sounds like he’s singing a duet with Orval the duck and John Wayne… good luck

To play music from a mobile phone, is there any advantage to using 5-10 with no mid, instead of channel 3-4, with all three high/mid/low?

Yes, you would use 5-10 for backing track, as it doesn't make sense to amplify the high/low/mid bands of the track. It will unnecessarily distort, if you insert in 1-4, and use those knobs. You can also choose the RCA inputs for playing backing track

Hi I’m no professional sound guy , but have this mixer for a duo , but can only here voice out of one speaker any help would be grateful?

Check you are using STERIO leads from your mics to the mixer these give signal to left and right channel also check left and right out puts from mixer are working by swopping speaker plugs into mixer over and is balance control in centre position

Worth the wait

I have tried many mixers & they have not been very good.Always going in the red.As i use them for Djing.This one is really good.Never goes in the ed & the quality is very good & clear..Had to wait for a little while for it.Worth the wait.

This is a stunning piece of kit!

Having been a fan of Yamaha hi-fi separates and musical instruments for many years I had high hopes for this product. IAM not disappointed it is superb. Currently being used to mix Vocal and acoustic guitar with backing tracks and the sound is amazing. The inputs are noiseless the whole layout is very intuitive. My only criticism is the manual is a bit light on information however there are literally dozens of videos on YOUTUBE which really help. Including one guy who has rented Yamaha MG10 mixers out for professional services over 5,000 times and never had an issue with one. I wholeheartedly recommend this excellent product.

Perfect!

I’ve been using it for 2 weeks now in a home studio environment in a setting to record sound meditation sessions. (Gongs, singing bowls, chimes etc.)I find the effect function very useful to create lovely reverb effects during recording.The only issue with it is that if you wanna use it as a USB mixer to send the signal to your computer you might have issues. The output signal on the USB port isn’t loud enough. I have read many forums about that and it’s a common problem with these mixers. I had to add an additional audio interface to it to get a strong enough signal on the computer.Apart from that it’s a great piece of kit!

Totally rubbish. Doesn't include a UK plug and there isn't usable. Spend your money on a product which works.
