A goldmine of valuable information
I am an enthusiastic canvas torturer rather than an artist, but even so, I gained such an enormous amount of valuable tuition and information from this very easy to read book. I now have a good idea of what I need to understand, pay attention to, and where to start. The explanations and tips are accompanied by some awesome examples and closeup views of the author's paintings to demonstrate various points.I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. There is nothing unnecessary in the book and it doesn't assume that anyone is an idiot. There is only clear easy to learn from information and a strong encouragement to start making paintings come alive by adding people.I'm genuinely grateful that I stumbled upon this gem!

inspirational
Its not so much a tutorial in the normal teaching sense but provides a general discussion using Hazels own painting and sketches as examples of what can be achieved if you learn the basics of human anatomy and explore the use of quick strokes of paint to provides the basic shape or outline of a human form without using fine detail of facial features and the like. You learn by the examples to provide the basis for the observers imagination to complete the picture a bit like an impressionist type of approach.I found it truly inspirational and it prompted me to start brush sketching random figures in oils in a wide variety of poses and attitudes which I have not done for as long as I can remember. Providing you have knowledge of the basic human body proportions it only takes a little while to settle into the methods demonstrated and you start to improve very quickly with your appreciation of the loose and free format used.Well worth the moderate cost involved.

Title of book Misleading no teaching really
There is very little teaching in this book just beautiful images of people who have been simply painted, mostly in watercolour. There are better youtube videos online, that will have more of a step by step approach. Gave it five stars because people tend to read these first.

Not what I expected
This book is more a showcase of the author’s works and does not give enough insight on the technique. More info would be more helpful for beginners

Great examples and guidance from Hazel
Great examples and guidance from Hazel. I like the smaller landscape format and it's easy to follow. Perfect if you're looking to add realistic figures into paintings. Covers all mediums but mostly watercolour.

So, so...
Many photos of paintings. Very light on proportions and shallow explanations overall... A "so, so" book. I will not buy a book from this "collection" again.

I’m just learning to draw and paint and I found this book very useful. Each page has some clear instruction that can easily be followed and a beautifully painted illustration of the points discussed. If you want to add human figures to your paintings or drawings, I highly recommend this book.
