The gelatinous media was already old and dehydrated with cracks.

Disappointing. This item in my opinion is not fit for its manufacturing purpose - that being retaining ants for observation and having a colony. I've had two types of ants in this in the small time I've had it, and both managed to escape. I have now resorted to coated the inside of lids with Vaseline. I have sealed the bottom with the same as well.It also says that the chamber is removable. I have not managed to remove this as of yet, as it does not seem possible without breaking. I am unsure if this is down to myself or simply false information.The design itself is good. I am pleased with this part of it - but clearly the air vents need rethinking.

#DO NOT PURCHASE# UK Red ants get out! badly designed air holes.... I've just wasted £20 on ants, and what this cost, plus I have a very unhappy child! The descriptions wrong too, says you don't need to feed or water your ants because of the gel used, however, when you open the box, the instructions say you do!!!!!! I bought it ages ago ready for my kids recent birthday, but only got to put the ants in yesterday, so can't even get a refund now. Not happy, feel conned, should be taken off the market!
