Q: I'm a complete novice, but want something suitable for 9 year old grandson. Does this model present images 'upside down?

I can confirm the images are the right way up. It looks the part for a 9yr old. It got my 12yr old son very seriously into astronomy. Hes doing his GCSE this year a year early partly due to this scope. Images if the moon next to my review were taken with this.

Q: I already have a more rugged equatorial (star-tracking) mount. Does the tube assembly attach to the mount using a standard camera-style fitting?

Yes - I use my Manfrotto tripod with mine.

Yes, this Tscope is suitable for the very beginner only good for looking at the moon but not much good for anything beyond taht
