You can use any software that is compatible with the protocol of of the internal device. There are a number of offerings free on line. I use Scanmaster.

Will it work with applemac?

I use this on a Mac with OBD Auto Doctor - So yes it does.

Should it work on 2005 vw golf 2.0 tdi?

I don't know about the golf but it does work with my 2011 merc S350
