Is the xl unit available and where can I see an example?

I had to get it from the UK. Poor quality. Seams starting fraying after one summer season.

Are the guy wires required to hold its shape, or with well anchored feet can the guy lines be omitted?

It will hold its shape without them, but it’s shape is just begging to fly, so always use the guy wires.

What is the diameter of the poles?

The poles themselves? Either 3/4 or 5/8 inch. I have not measured, but certainly less than an inch.
