QNAP TS-251 2 Bay Desktop NAS Enclosure (GDPR Compliant)

Very good quality product. Perfect for centralized management and storage of all your home data. Easy to configure with a lot of support both from the community and from QNAP themselves. I am using it to store all the documents on all my computers at home, movies, photos and music. Using an SSL certificate I can access it securely over the Internet and stream media to my mobile phone/tablet and/or office.With plex server I connected it to my TV (supports plex), so that whoever needs to see a movie, photos or listen to music can do that without any extra remotes (just the TV remote) - perfect for non-technical users.While it is setup with 2 mirrored hardisks for keeping the data safe, I also set it up to synch to a google drive account with 2-way sync. If my Internet connection stops working, at least I can access my data through my google account. It also reduces the risk of loss of data in case something really goes wrong with the actual hardware.With regards to hardisks I am using normal ones which were in my previous NAS (D-Link DNS-323) and they work very well, however if you want proper ones for a NAS I would go for WD Red ones. They are much more reliable for continuous use and less noisy. They probably also generate less heat than normal hardisks, therfore the NAS fan will have to work much less. Overall the NAS is quite silent.If you are a technical person buying this, I would recommend you upgrade it to 2GB or more immediately, otherwise it is perfect for normal use with 1GB ram (I used it like that for some time and it worked flawlessly). QNAP are an example brand for all the others to follow - they care and listen to their customer's needs.

This is my second Qnap Nas and a great upgrade from the old TS-210 I had before.I have it set up by my TV so I could connect it via HDMI. You can then use a selection of apps in the HybridDesk Station. These include XBMC, Chrome browser, Spotify and Youtube and you can connect a wireless keyboard and mouse as well. You can also install a virtual PC using QvPC on this NAS but I have not done this yet.Another key feature for me was the ability to back up the data easily from a number of my devices. I have my iMac using this as a Apple Time Machine and also with the apps available I am backing up photos and videos from my Iphone and Ipad directly to this and I can do this when at home or remotely.Remote access is also very easy using MyQnapCloud . I can login in and change any settings etc like I was at home from anywhere via a web browser which is a great feature for me.Overall a very impressive product and I am very pleased with this purchase.

I bought this as a "marginal" upgrade for a QNAP 269L I owned. The reason was primarily for the Spotify support on the "HD Station" app.The two are very similar in spec terms, but the 251 is more upgradeable, has a faster processor (benchmarks like the 269 Pro model). Part of the reason for purchasing was that it was available for a very low price (approx 280) which was £100 less than the 269L.Whilst the 251 edges 269L on spec and performance, it does have its drawbacks.The 269 is a really nicely engineered metal construction. The 251 is largely plastic. QNAPs aren't cheap and with the older 269 you did feel that at least some of that price was going on the materials used for the enclosure.Migrating the disks was incredibly easy, though I did encounter one issue due to the Samba upgrade on the 251 (V4 vs V3).The seller I bough from shipped it with a Euro kettle lead which whilst annoying was easy to fix.Also, this may be slightly quieter than the 269 which is odd as the disks are the same.If you need more memory DO NOT buy the QNAP sold RAM. It's ridiculously overpriced. There are lots of alternatives available. In my case I bought 2 x 4GB Kingston modules. On this model the memory MUST be matched (unlike the 269L).If you can buy this for £280 as I did it's a good price, but I'd feel rather short changed if bought near RRP at 380ish now that it's now largely plastic.Overall however it's a very impressive piece of kit with a huge range of app support. It's really a mini home / SOHO server. You don't need any linux skills at all, though if something does ever go wrong they do come in handy.

Dopo aver avuto un QNap TS-412 (4 bay) ed aver apprezzato le su funzionalità e capito quali erano i suoi difetti (processore ARM, poca memoria e rumoroso), ho deciso di regalarmi un TS-251.Si presenta subito bello a vedersi, bianco con scocca in plastica (unica vera pecca!).È dotato di processore intel Celeron da 2.41Ghz davvero scattante e reattivo in ogni operazione. Ho comprato il modello con 1Gb di RAM ma in contemporanea ho subito preso anche 2 moduli da 4Gb della Crucial, il CT2KIT51264BF160B (http://www.amazon.it/Crucial-8GB-GB-CT2KIT51264BF160B-Memoria/dp/B005LDLVAO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457433106&sr=8-1&keywords=CT2KIT51264BF160B), per effettuare subito un upgrade come consigliato da molti online.L'operazione di aggiornamento RAM è molto semplice ed esiste anche una guida ufficiale QNap che si può trovare a questo indirizzo: [...] Se non avete grosse necessità potete anche farne a meno, ma io volevo utilizzare anche la virtualizzazione per la quale si necessita almeno 4Gb di RAM.Per quanto riguarda la rumorosità dell'apparecchio per adesso è davvero silenziosissimo. Ho già installato e lanciato un macchina virtuale con UBUNTU ma anche in questo caso il rumore emesso era molto basso.Le temperature mi sembrano un po' più alte di quello che mi aspetterei da un NAS professionale ma comunque sono nella norma. In questo momento si aggirano sui 40°C. Probabilmente con una scocca in alluminio si sarebbe avuto una dissipazione del calore più efficiente ma un rumore più alto (come era per il TS-412).L'installazione del NAS è stata banale ed è ben supportata da una minimale guida cartacea ma volendo esiste una pagina internet che entra un po' più in dettaglio. Per la configurazione consiglio di partire dall'installazione del software QFinderPro scaricabile dalla pagina internet del prodotto.Il QNap TS-251 è pensato soprattutto per l'utente avanzato ma pensa anche all'utente standard, offrendo configurazioni guidate per la maggior parte delle operazioni. Volendo si possono configurare le cartelle condivise nel minimo dettaglio (accesso, lettura, scrittura, cancellazione di file, etc.).Anche la gestione del NAS è davvero completa. Si passa dalla gestione dell'alimentazione (Accensione e spegnimento programmato WOL, etc.), al controllo della ventola o dei LED (spegnimento in certi orari, intensità, etc.).La gestione degli utenti è davvero buona. Si possono configurare utenti locali o collegarlo ad un active directory e quindi utilizzando gli utenti di dominio. Si possono creare cartelle home per ogni utente con le relative quote e configurare le cartelle condivise garantendo o negando l'acceso a file e cartelle. Gli utenti, anche se fanno parte del gruppo administrators, non hanno tutte autorizzazioni del super utente admin che quindi vi conviene da subito blindare con una password molto forte oppure utilizzando l'autenticazione a 2 vie, magari servendosi di Google authenticator.Questo NAS può essere collegato direttamente ad una Tv ed utilizzato come Player multimediale oppure come vero e proprio pc magari collegando tastiera e mouse. Per far ciò basta scaricare una App apposita che provvedere ad installare tutto ciò che serve.Passiamo poi al vero punto di forza di questo NAS: le applicazioni. Ne esistono centinaia. Da quelle per la configurazione di backup da e verso il Cloud (GDrive, OneDrive, DropBox, etc.) a quelle per creare veri e propri siti Web da pubblicare poi in rete. Dalla app per la gestione delle telecamere di sicurezza (limitata solo a 2 ma si possono aumentare comprando una licenza) al gioco di Super Mario. Insomma una app per ogni cosa!Il NAS offre tante altre funzioni come UPnP, l'invio dei video direttamente a dispositivi come Chromecast o Kodi, la transcodifica dei filmati, il server FTP, il server Web, il server SQL, aMule, Torrent, etc.. Forse sono così tante cose che alla fine confondono!In conclusione, questo più che un NAS è un server a tutto tondo che si può porre al centro di una sistema multimediale, specialmente se si acquista il telecomando (cosa che farò a breve).Unico neo potrebbe essere la scocca in plastica, ma ho apprezzato la silenziosità della plastica al rumore del più prezioso alluminio.

Me ha gustado el sistema operativo QTS, la cantidad de aplicaciones disponibles y la enorme comunidad existente. El problema con tanta aplicación es que ya he tenido que aumentarle memoria, 1GB es muy poco para ejecutar servicios y aplicaciones como Plex o Kodi al mismo tiempo. He metido un módulo de 8GB y funciona sin problemas. Cuando meta máquinas virtuales quizás necesite meterle 8GB a mayores. Independientemente de lo que indique la documentación, acepta 16GB.Para manejar Kodi estoy utilizando un mando microsoft media center de hace años. No le hace falta conectar su receptor, funciona perfectamente con el receptor incluido en la NAS. Cuando le cambié la memoria aproveché y empujé el sensor contra el frontal, mejorando el ángulo de recepción.

Bin jetzt selbst seit fast 3 Jahren Besitzer eines QNAP TS-212 gewesen und habe mir jetzt ein Upgrade auf TS-251 gegönnt. Die wichtigste Änderung war für mich der Intel Dual-Core, da der alte CPU doch so langsam an seine Grenzen stieß. Features wie OnTheFly Transcoding & Co sind für mich dann nur zusätzliche Gimmicks gewesen.## AusstattungPositiv zu erwähnen ist, dass die Festplatten rausgenommen werden können ohne das Gehäuse öffnen zu müssen. Auch hat QNAP auf der Frontseite endlich einen USB 3.0 Anschluss gesetzt, dass mit der passenden USB Festplatte für genug Speed beim Backup sorgt. Die Möglichkeit den Arbeitsspeicher bei Bedarf zu erweitern ist ebenfalls praktisch, nur vergleichsweise teuer.## InstallationAls fortgeschrittener QNAP Nutzer war die Inbetriebnahme kein Problem für mich. Auffällig war hier, dass das Booten und einrichten der Festplatten samt Formatierung sehr viel schneller ablief als ich es noch von meinem QNAP TS-212 gewohnt war.## TranscodingTranscoding ist für viele Nutzer von NAS Geräten ein wichtiges Feature, da man sich wegen den hinterlegten Medien wie Fotos und Videos keine Gedanken über Codec und Format machen muss. Bei meinem TS-212 gab es das Transcoding auch schon als Betaversion und hat dementsprechend schlecht funktioniert. Hier erwartete ich ein wenig mehr, da jetzt ein wenig mehr Rechenpower zur Verfügung stand. Das Transcoding selbst hat gut funktioniert nur von der Performance war ich nicht ganz überzeugt, da es vergleichsweise zur Originalwiedergabe doch etwas ruckelig war, obwohl ich bereits das Codecpack installiert hatte. Hier muss man wohl stattdessen auf die Offline Transkodierung zurückgreifen, die für die Filme das im Hintergrund bereits im Vorhinein macht. Viel dazu sagen kann ich nicht, da ich das erstmal im Detail testen muss. Nervig ist aber auf jeden Fall, dass man beim Transkodieren Filme nicht nach vorne oder nach hinten scrollen kann. Sehr ärgerlich sowas.## Performance bei der Datenübertragung ?Hier muss man aufpassen da man schnell die Schuld auf das NAS Gerät schiebt. Zuerst sollte man schauen, ob das NAS auch tatsächlich mit 1 Gigabit am Router / Switch angeschlossen ist. Gerade bei Fritzbox & Co kann es schnell passieren, dass der 1 Gigabit Port aber aus stromspargründen nur mit 100 Mbit läuft. Greift man per WLAN auf das NAS zu sollte man ebenfalls schauen, dass man hier ein modernes AC WLAN im Einsatz hat. Mein alter WLAN Dongle packte nur so um die 150 Mbit und da ist der Flaschenhals auch schnell gefunden. Wenn man tatsächlich die reine Geschwindigkeit testen möchte, dann sollte man diesen Test per LAN und einer Gigabit LAN Verbindung ausprobieren.## FazitInsgesamt ist das QNAP TS-251 für mich ein solides Upgrade zu meinem TS-212 NAS und ich habe auch nicht vor das Gerät zurückzugeben. Die Oberfläche, die Datenübertragung und das generellen Handling läuft dank Intel Dualcore doch sehr geschmeidig. Auch der Zugriff übers Internet und per App läuft um einiges besser und sorgt langsam für richtiges Zukunftsfeeling bei der Nutzung von NAS Geräten.Von meiner Seite eine klare Kaufempfehlung von meiner Seite.
