Works if you just want sound, but doesn't preserve 5.1 signal from PS4
*** EDIT *** - I have updated the review to 5 stars. The issue described below can be fixed by clicking on the 'options' button on the controller DURING BLU-RAY PLAYBACK and switching the audio setting to DTS or Dolby - it fixes the issue. Therefore this was not an issue with the UGREEN product, more likely a PS4 anomaly. Also their customer service was very helpful in advice on fixing the glitch.___I recently bought a PS4 as a gift for my partner without realising that there is no Optical Audio output from the standard PS4 model to plug into our 5.1 surround sound audio system After some research online, I found this device, which will apparently extract the audio signal from the PS4’s HDMI output and allow me to send it to my surround sound amplifier using an Optical Audio cable.I received the converter – set it up, passed the output to my 5.1 amp via optical cable… and initially it seemed like it was working. When on the PS4 menu screen, our 5.1 amp recognises the incoming signal as DOLBY DIGITAL, or DTS… etc. However, when playing a 5.1 surround Blu Ray on the PS4, the signal being received by 5.1 amp falls back to only 2.1, and loses the DOLBY or DTS signal (it doesn’t seem to preserve the 5.1 signal from the PS4). Obviously, this defeats the point of having a surround sound audio setup entirely. For reference, we have been using a PS3 until now, using the native optical audio output straight into our amp, and this always worked fine. The amp would recognise the 5.1 signal and switch to the correct setting.

Great for those that don't have audio out on their TV's
This product is amazing, If like me you have a TV which does not have a Sound output (Normally just a head phone Jack) then this is the best solution to divert all your sound to a stereo or will enable you to use head phones as well .I have it set up to my PS4 and it plays the audio in real time with no latency or delay.Funnily enough if i use only the sound from the TV when playing PS4, without this audio splitter box there is a slight delay on sound. So this box even plays audio better than with out it.

Works well but unpractical things happen with my TVs HDMI
I bought this device because Apple didnt think 200Euro was enough to provide an optical port on its AppleTVG4. So while this splitter device works, and provides TOS output, it wasnt my first choice. Then there are practical issues. When the splitter is connected, my (Philips) TV introduces an 'AppleTV' HDMI entry from time to time whereas in order to watch content I need to switch it to 'HDMI3' - on which port the AppleTV resides but nevertheless doesnt always display. Further when this devices is between the AppleTV and the TV, it doesnt seem to send sound over the HDMI from the splitter. At least my TV doesnt play it. When I am watching one of my NAS'es surround movies, the sound though my amplifier is really great though. But practically I have to plug in and out all cabling when switching between 'normal' AppleTV use and surround sound mode with the splitter. Kind of nasty and again thanks Apple. NOT.

Didnt work at 4k
Tried using this for an xbox one s and a 4k monitor, would not work at 4k whereas a standard hdmi cable does. the highest setting i could use was 1440 so this is not as advertised. The audio did work ok, but if you want to use this on a 4k setup id look elsewhere.Ive changed my mind on the setup now and stuck with a standard hdmi to get 4k and gone for a toslink to analogue converter for the sound instead.

Bad design
Works ok but its poorly designed in that you need a female port to plug the input into, which means it must be plugged into a laptop, not an hdmi lead, so it cant easily be left set up.I had to buy a coupler to plug my chromecast in, and it still would not transmit picture from the chromecast. In the end i returned it and bought a cheaper one which just has two female ports in the box, so chromecast plugs straight in and works perfectly. All in all a poor design that is overcomplicated to the point it is useless for what most people will need it for.

Stuttering optical sound
I got this to split audio from my Nintendo Switch Dock hdmi output to optical input on my speaker system. It does not seem to function correctly, my receiver reports 48k optical input but the sound stutters every second. Despite different cables. 3.5mm output works okay.

One Star
Whilst product passed the HDMI feed through it did not produce any digital audio through the SPDIF with or without a additional power supply. Replaced with another product and that worked fine on the same kit, so it was definitely the device. After leaving a poor review, UGREEN contacted me to try and resolve the issue and were happy to replace the unit or provide a refund, great customer service! Perhaps my unit was a dud, hence I have changed my rating to 3 stars.
