Does anyone know whether this can be used as an in-line volume control with another electric instrument e.g: an electric violin?

I don't see why not. I use mine in my chain for fades and muting the signal between my guitar parts when I'm using heavy distortion and between songs. It's a very useful pedal but it doesn't add volume, only lowers it.

Does the tone change at different volumes?
