This is a great portable hard drive from a Toshiba, who in my experience have always produced some of the highest quality electronics. If I am in the market for any new devices, I will always check to see if there are options provided by Toshiba. The hard drive is about the size of a small slice of toast and about an equivalent thickness. The exterior is made of a hard plastic shell and there is one blue activity light above the USB plug that will be lit when running and blink when transferring data. The drive does not require any external power source and will start up as soon as it is plugged into a USB port. The provided cable runs at USB 3.0 speeds and is approximately 12 in long. The drive vibrates very gently, which is to be expected since this is still a physical HD - you would never notice it with the drive on your desk, I only happened to feel it while the drive was resting on my knee while I used it with my laptop. There are also four soft plastic feet on the bottom of the device to prevent slippage. As other reviewers have noted, the drive will shut itself off after a period of inactivity, which is great for the longevity of the device and I have not experienced any slowdown whatsoever when spinning it back up. The capacity out of the box for the HD is approximately 936 GB. The only point to note would be that this is drive is billed - correctly, in my opinion - as an external HD rather than a portable HD. Some other drives are designed to be taken around with the user and have additional design features that protect the drive from drops and jolts which are not provided in this product. You can still certainly take this device on the road, but use extra caution because I am unsure if this drive would survive and still function after a drop from hand level onto a hard surface. For the price and features, I am happy to keep it on my desk and be able to take it on the go in a pinch!

This review is for the 1TB Canvio Basic HDD. This is a great basic hard disk drive. I already own quite a few HDDs from various manufacturers in sizes ranging from 20 to 300GB, however this is the first Toshiba branded item I've purchased. So far I've successfully backed up all my Dad's documents and emails (about 30GB in total) from a Windows XP PC via USB 2.0. This took about 10 minutes (USB 2.0 remember) and I was very happy with this performance. The black plastic case appears sturdy and features a white LED indicator. The supplied USB 3.0 cable is just the right length to reach the front USB port on a desktop without being too bulky to fit inside a zip-up case. I haven't used the USB 3.0 capability yet so cannot review that aspect. Like most modern drives it derives power from the USB port and this was absolutely fine. One bonus is the drive comes installed with only a couple of pdf user manuals. Personally I don't like HDDs that come with a suite of backup software that I rarely want to use and sometimes cause plug and play problems. Overall an excellent drive. Update Jan 24 2019 to my Review dated 26/01/17 below. I Now have 10 Toshiba Canvio Basics 1TB drives purchased over the last two to three years, all are still working correctly, most of these are almost full of video recordings along with text documents. I have no hesitation in recommending this product. I have several of these Toshiba 3.0 Hard Drives which I've purchased over the last two years, all of which are still operating without any problems, even though these are swapped over regularly. I use mine with Windows 7, I've recently discovered they also work with Windows Vista. I save Text, Photos and video. A hour film uses about 1.25Gb .These are Plug and Play, so there,s no setting up, They're easier to use than CD and DVD +/- that has little memory, and a hour of video only takes about two or three minutes to copy, and can be removed or replaced at will. I am extremely happy with this product. It is fast, durable and does exactly what it should. I bought this to create some space on my laptop, transferring about 100mb of files took no time at all compared to some USB sticks i have bought in the past. It is fairly heavy which makes me think it is very durable. You can tell just by holding it that it is well made, with a strong outer case. I like the fact that you can take out the usb, as if it ever breaks it can be easily replaces. It also makes it easier to store. Something that would be nice would be if it came with a little case to protect it, it does not. Overall, this product is great, i used it to store files and also handed in my university dissertation on it, it's a reliable device!

Brilliant little device

3年間持ち運びデータ用と使っていたHDDが壊れたので買い替えです。 いろいろな評判からまあ信用できるだろうということで選んでいますが、 普段はデスクトップに付け、出掛けるときにはノートPCと一緒に持って行く ということを続けると、数年に1回は壊れます。 デスクトップにはバックアップ用に同じものがもう一台繋いであります。 本当はノート(SSDモデル)のデータを帰ってきたらバックアップとした方が 壊れないでしょうね。 SSDで1TB3万円以下が出たから次の持ち運び用はSSDかな。

Ho acquistato questo hard disk esterno tempo fa e fin dal primo utilizzo si è rivelato pratico ed efficiente. La connessione USB 3.0 garantisce trasferimenti di file rapidi, ma è perfettamente compatibile anche con porte USB 2.0, risultando molto versatile. Non richiede alcuna installazione: basta collegarlo e funziona subito, rendendolo perfetto anche per chi non ha particolare dimestichezza con la tecnologia. Il design è elegante, sobrio e resistente, adatto sia all’uso quotidiano sulla scrivania che in viaggio. Un’ottima soluzione di archiviazione, capiente e stabile nel tempo.

Apenas lo llevo usando unas semanas pero de momento muy contento. El disco es de tamaño muy contenido, y su velocidad de escritura es decente con usb 3.0. En el paquete viene el disco más el cable, listo para usar. Basta ponerle el cable y conectarlo al ordenador para que el sistema operativo lo reconozca y en breves segundos lo instale. El disco se alimenta directamente de la conexión usb, no necesita de otro cable para conectarlo a la corriente. Llegó muy rápido, más rápido de lo previsto, lo que habla muy bien de Amazon y nada más tenerlo en mis manos lo enchufé e hice copias de seguridad de dos portátiles (uno sólo con usb 2.0) hasta casi llenarlo. Todo rápido y sencillo. ¿Por qué digo que es resistente? Porque como soy un manazas al desconectarlo de un portatil se me cayó al suelo desde una altura aproximada de 1 metro. Encima no cayó sólo con la fuerza de la gravedad sino que al intentar cogerlo le impulsé todavía con más fuerza y se dió un golpe tremendo. Acostumbrado a otros discos anteriores que se estropeaban por un soplido pensaba que me lo había cargado sin remedio... pero lo volví a conectar al portatil y... qué alivio, todo estaba perfecto, ningún problema de funcionamiento. Pese a que en las instrucciones se avisa de que el disco puede alcanzar temperaturas relativamente altas, la verdad es que siemrpre que he tocado la carcasa mientras hacía grandes copias, estaba más bien fría. En cuanto al precio, posiblemente sea el disco portatil de 1tb con mejor relación calidad-precio que existe actualmente, no descarto comprar otro de 2Tb en los próximos meses para usarlo con la televisión y otros dispositivos. Recomiendo este pequeño Toshiba.

Seit knapp 20 Jahren beschäftige ich mich leidenschaftlich mit IT Hardware und habe in dieser Zeit etwa 30 externe Festplatten persönlich genutzt. Neben Western Digital sind die Festplatten von Toshiba immer an der Spitze gewesen. Vorab sei gesagt, dass meine erworbene Festplatte auf den Philippinen hergestellt worden ist. Daher kann ich keine Angaben zu denjenigen Festplatten machen, die in China hergestellt worden sind. Aber sowie ich weiß, macht hier der Herstellungsort bezogen auf die Qualität keinen Unterschied. Vor dem Erwerb dieser externen Festplatte hatte ich ein oder zwei ältere externe Festplatten kurzzeitig im Gebrauch, war von diesen jedoch nicht richtig überzeugt, da diese u.a. schnell überhitzten! Allerdings waren es diesmal auch keine Festplatten nahmhafter Hersteller wie Toshiba oder Western Digital. Nach langer Suche und ausführlichem Lesen von Produktrezensionen stieß ich schließlich auf diese externe Festplatte von Toshiba und habe sie Ende Dezember 2017 erworben. Hier nun die detaillierten Einzelheiten (aktualisiert) zu dieser externen Festplatte: Inbetriebnahme / Betriebssysteme: Die Festplatte lässt sich über das beigelegte USB-Kabel problemlos und schnell mit dem USB-Laufwerk des Laptop oder PC verbinden. Es ist keinerlei Extra-Software zu installieren, sondern läuft umgehend an und ist sofort nach Plug and Play betriebsbereit. Als Laufwerkname erscheint bei mir TOSHIBA EXT (diesen kann man aber bei Bedarf problemlos ändern) Ein Passwort zwecks Zugriff auf die Festplatte ist nicht erforderlich bzw. muss auch nicht eingerichtet werden. Bis vor kurzem habe ich einen Laptop von Asus (Modell: X72JR-TY123V Ci5-450M, im Okt. 2010 erworben) mit USB 2.0 Laufwerk und Windows 7 (64 bit) verwendet. Mittlerweile habe ich vorwiegend einen Computer von Lenovo (M720q Tiny, mit Windows 10 Pro und USB 3.0-Buchsen) in Gebrauch. Auch am neuen HP Computer meines Vaters (ebenfalls Windows 10 Pro mit USB 3.0-Buchsen) bzw. am MacBook Pro einer Bekannten funktioniert sie tadellos und es traten nie Kompatibilitätsprobleme o.Ä. auf. Verarbeitung / Funktion: Die Bedienung gestaltet sich vom ersten Moment an als absolut leicht und müsste auch für jeden, der sich evt. eher weniger mit IT-Hardware auskennt, ohne weiteres machbar sein. Ich verwende die Festplatte privat, um meine kompletten Daten zu sichern bzw. die nicht allzu große Haupt-Festplatte meines Computers zu entlasten (was auch die Geschwindigkeit des Computers positiv beeinflussen kann). Sie ist in jedem Fall für alle Typen von Dokumenten oder Medien bestens geeignet und macht von der Gesamterscheinung her einen qualitativ besonderen Eindruck. Man kann wie bei einem herkömmlichen USB-Stick auch u.a. einstellen, dass das Laufwerk komprimiert wird, um Speicherplatz zu sparen. Leider war bei mir von vornherein „nur“ 931 GB als Speicherkapazität verfügbar, nicht die vollen 1000 GB. Aber das ist wohl oder übelst, wie auch z.B. bei großen USB-Sticks, Standard… Das Gewicht der Festplatte beträgt etwa knapp 230 g und damit extrem leicht. Gehäuse der Festplatte macht einen sehr gut verarbeiten Eindruck. Zudem ist sie angesichts der enormen Speicherkapazität sehr klein (Abmessungen: 11,9 x 7,9 x 1,5 cm bzw. 2,5 Zoll groß). Man kann sie dadurch problemlos in jeder Jacken-, Hosen- oder Laptopinnentasche verstauen. Sie lässt sich bequem in der Hand halten und fühlt sich gut bzw. stabil an. Auf der Unterseite sind vier flache Noppen angebracht, sodass sie stets rutschfest liegt. Ferner ist die Oberfläche in einem zeitlosen und wie aus einem Guss wirkenden Design gehalten. Zudem hat Toshiba im Vergleich zu manch anderen Herstellern einen sog. G-Sensor in die externe Festplatte integriert. Falls sie doch einmal herunterfallen sollte, ziehen die Schreib-/Leseköpfe sich sofort ein, damit beim Aufprall die Daten auf der Magnetplatte nicht kaputtgehen! Performance / Lautstärke: Die Geschwindigkeit bei der Übertragung von Daten ist nicht unbedingt bzw. nur ein ganz klein wenig schneller als bei meinem USB-Stick. Aber es liegt daran, dass ich (s.o.) nur ein Laufwerk mit USB 2.0 hatte und mein Laptop nun schon seit Oktober 2010 im Dauereinsatz ist, was das Gerät nicht schneller werden lässt;) Bei meinem neuen Computer von Lenovo kann ich sagen, dass bei mir nun Datenmengen in Höhe von ca. 30 MB/s oder auch mehr übertragen werden. Riesiger Vorteil bzw. Pluspunkt: Die Festplatte ist problemlos abwärtskompatibel! Das bedeutet konkret, dass man sie auch mit einem USB 2.0-Port verwenden kann bzw. keineswegs einen USB 3.0-Port am jeweiligen Computer benötigt, wie es leider bei manch anderen externen Festplatten der Fall ist... Und sie ist innerhalb von ca. 3 sec. sofort mit der USB-Schnittstelle meines Computers oder ggf. Laptops etc. verbunden, was ich sehr angenehm finde. Sobald Daten übertragen werden, blinkt das blaue Licht (bei USB 2.0-Buchse ist es weiß) auf der Oberseite der Festplatte. Wenn die Übertragung der Daten abgeschlossen ist, leuchtet es eine kurze Weile weiter bzw. leuchtet sofort wieder auf, wenn man Festplatte verwendet. Die Festplatte hält äußerst lange am Stück durch und ist vollkommen leise im Betrieb bzw. absolut nicht zu hören, selbst wenn man das Ohr darüber hält und sie lange (also mehrere Stunden) im Dauerbetrieb verwendet wird. Man könnte sie theoretisch im nächtlichen Dauerbetrieb neben das Bett stellen und würde praktisch nichts merken. Wärmeentwicklung / Stromverbrauch: Nach z.B. 4-5 Stunden im Dauerbetrieb wird sie auf der Oberseite überhaupt nicht, unten ein klein wenig warm. Aber keineswegs heiß oder gar überhitzt. Und wenn sie mal einen ganzen Tag lang verwendet wird, ist die Wärmeentwicklung immer noch sehr gering. Zum Stromverbrauch an sich kann ich leider wenig Konkretes sagen, da mein Computer / Laptop immer über Kabel / Netzteil via Steckdose mit Saft versorgt wird (Laptop-Akku schon lange wegen Defekt ausgebaut). Doch ich kenne ein paar Leute, die diese Festplatte durch meine Weiterempfehlung auch benutzen und erwähnt haben, dass der Energieverbrauch ein gutes Stück verringert werden konnte. Der Grund ist folgender: Toshiba war einer der ersten Hersteller von Festplatten, welche die sog. "Green Funktion" unterstützen und verarbeitet haben. Die Folge ist, dass der Laptop oder PC via USB-Port die Festplatte somit bei Nichtnutzung abschalten kann. Dies spart insbesondere bei mit Akku betriebenen Laptops durchaus Energie. Und ich gehe fest davon aus, dass Toshiba bei USB 3.0-Anschlüssen den Energiebedarf allgemein reduziert haben wird. Ich habe die Festplatte zum einen mindestens zwei Mal pro Woche selbst im längeren Einsatz am Stück zwecks Sicherung meiner Daten. Sie leistet jedes Mal absolut zuverlässige Arbeit und erhitzt sich nie. Doch hauptsächlich dient die Festplatte bei mir mitlterweile als eine Art hausinterner Server zur Sicherung meiner kompletten Daten und zum internen Zugriff auf meine eigene Mediathek an Videos und Musik, was durch diese Festplatte daheim auch jederzeit offline möglich ist. Lieferumfang / Versand: Es befindet sich bereits ein USB-Verbindungskabel (Länge: ca. 54 cm) in der Verpackung neben der Festplatte. Dieses funktioniert problemlos ohne Verbindungsprobleme oder Wackelkontakte. Einschätzung / Tipp: Da die Datenmengen (Bilder, Songs, Word-/PDF-Dokumente etc.) immer mehr werden, sind externe Datenträger zur Sicherung umso wichtiger geworden. Vom Preis-/Leistungs-Verhältnis kann man unterm Strich überhaupt nichts beanstanden. Natürlich sind 54 € (mein damaliger Kaufpreis) nicht gerade wenig Geld. Aber verglichen mit dem Preis für einen hochwertigen USB-Stick mit z.B. 128 GB Speicherkapazität (der locker ca. 35 € aufwärts kostet) ist solch eine externe Festplatte nicht nur praktischer, sondern auch wesentlich preisgünstiger, hat mehr Speicherkapazität und ist vermutlich langlebiger. Und für die Sicherung von wichtigen Daten sollte man in jedem Fall in beste Qualität investieren. Denn falls tatsächlich (je älter PC oder Laptop, desto höher ist wohl das Risiko) eine interne Festplatte kaputtgeht bzw. der Inhalt nicht mehr zu retten ist, hat man oft ein extrem großes Problem und man muss ja nicht erst durch irreparablen Schaden klug werden… Insgesamt bin ich mit dieser Hardware mehr als zufrieden und würde sie mir jederzeit (ggf. auch für spätere geschäftliche Aktivitäten) erneut zulegen! Zudem habe ich sie auch schon einigen Leuten weiterempfohlen, die sie jetzt geschäftlich / im Beruf benutzen und allesamt hochzufrieden sind. Leider kann man nur 5 Sterne vergeben, verdient hätte dieser Artikel die x-fache Menge. FAZIT: Höchste Kaufempfehlung!
