Excellent sound and a huge upgrade on the quality of sound from the TV
I've always been a big fan of Bose products ever since I bought a Mazda 6 and it had a Bose system installed in it. The sound quality was amazing so I had big hopes for this. In fact, this was such a huge improvement on my TV, my business partner bought one as well the day afterwards for her TV. I did a lot of research before buying this because there are a lot of sound bars out there that are half the price of this, but from the expert reviews I read, they don't seem to deliver good quality sound. I've got a big LG TV and to be honest, I didn't think the sound was too bad on it until I connected up this speaker. I didn't want to spend £100 on a sound bar and then think that it wasn't a good enough upgrade and from everything I've read about this Bose Solo 5, the sound quality was really good. In the box you get: ++ Bose sound bar ++ Universal remote control ++ 2 AA batteries ++ Coaxial cable ++ Optical cable ++ Instruction manual + universal remote codes ++ Power cable (Europe and UK) The fact that it comes with the cables to connect it up to your TV is great as a lot of sound bars don't. Bose really has concentrated on creating an effortless experience for their consumers. Additionally, to say the sound bar is easy to set up is an understatement. You simple connect the cable to the sound bar, connect it to the TV and then plug in. Having set two of these up now, my business partner's Panasonic automatically detected the sound bar and sound came out immediately. She then had to turn the volume on her TV down. My LG I had to go into the settings and swap my audio to optical out. The universal remote is great apart from one thing - no Smart mode which is a real shame, so you can't get away from needing your TV remote. However, for normal TV, Cable or Satellite watching, you can use just the universal remote. The instructions are very clear and simple to follow to set your remote up and the universal remote code booklet where you look up your manufacturer is very comprehensive and should have pretty much every device in there. The sound bar has a dialogue mode that cuts out more of the base to provide you with clearer dialogue - particularly good for news and documentary type programs. When you're watching normal TV programs such as drama or films, you want to turn this off though and let the speaker really come into its own. I did consider putting a video on here, but with all the compression of the file from the camera and then further compression from Amazon when uploading the video, there really would be no point as you wouldn't be able to experience the difference in quality, so I'm afraid you really will just have to take my word for it. The sound is excellent. Of course it helps that the sound is being projected forward by getting a sound bar as many TV's have their speakers on the back so the sound is rebounding off the wall. As a last point, interestingly all the cheap sound bars that you can buy in some of the supermarkets make a big deal out of their wattage - like 80W. I can't find anywhere on the box as to what the wattage is on the Bose. Clearly Bose know its all about quality rather than some highlights on what power they deliver. Very happy and can really recommend this. You won't be disappointed that you spent the extra.

A good sound overall; Bluetooth connectivity tricky.
The unit is very compact looks good mounted on the wall. I like the minimalist design and installation was pretty simple opting for the optical connection to my TV. It's worth remembering that this unit's selling point is that it's way better than your TV's internal speakers and on that count it ticks the box. In my set-up I use it for a mix of normal TV, Amazon Music via the FireTV app, and music streaming from an Amazon (Echo) Alexa device. All works well enough although I had wanted to stream from my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 phone but the bluetooth set-up in that use-case didn't really work as it took a few attempts to get it to pair and then forgot the pairing. Bluetooth set-up to Amazon Echo was much simpler and has consistently reconnected. The are some differences in the quality of sound depending on material being listened too. TV is good, music from TV sounds a bit flat and needs a bit of bass boost (which is a nice feature). Music from streaming services is generally very good with newer music from the last 10 years sounding great. Classics from the 60s, 70s and 80s with their sparse mixing and mastering sound okay but don't think your getting anything close to Hi-Fi quality. In my set-up, a home workshop/art studio, I am most impressed with the sound when working at further than 2m away. Closer and you're not really getting the stereo effect and the sound just good. I like the remote but wish it was a bit more streamlined - for most people you are not going to use the multiple source options and many of the tweaking features. But it integrates well with the TV and is the only remote I need to operate the TV and FireTV stick menu so for that it wins out.

Huge improvement in sound quality from modern TV
Overall I'm pleased with this soundbar. It makes a huge difference to the tone and quality of sound from my new flatscreen TV*. It's also compact, fitting neatly and discreetly on my TV stand, and the ability to play music and podcasts from my phone via Bluetooth is a bonus. It was a doddle to connect - one mains lead, one optical/digital sound lead; no problem at all. Sound quality, both treble and bass, seems good to me, especially music (have been enjoying the classical music in "Mozart in the Jungle"). What you won't get is disco-level volume or the kind of throbbing bass you feel through your feet. Also, if you're using a Sky+HD box, be aware that some channels have disappointingly low sound volume and the output from the Bose unit won't fully compensate for that (and this is why I have given it 4 stars rather than 5). But the volume is more than enough from most sources and adequately fills the room. The rather chunky remote control can be programmed to operate some (but in my experience so far, not all) functions on the TV, Sky box etc - but, of course, it's another remote control to add to the pile. If, like me, you find the sound quality from your TV poor, the Bose unit is well worth considering. *Not a comment on the Bose unit itself, but I had not bought a TV for a decade or so and hadn't appreciated how poor the sound from the modern ones - even, it seems from the internet, impressive-looking big ones - has become. The problem seems to be that flat cases don't leave room for decent speakers. This has created a new market for sound bars like this. Worth knowing if you're budgeting for a new TV.

Don't worry, it's a Bose
I suspect this is best suited for those with smaller (sensible sized?) televisions. I have a 32 inch Sony and it’s ideal. May as well get something bigger if you have anything over say 38 inches. The sound is also probably for those will smaller TVs. What I mean by that is I imagine owners of small (sensible) TVs probably aren’t into extremes, either of sound, or explosions, or gunfire, or ridiculous bass. This isn’t for you if you want to feel your arse vibrate, or your ears to bleed (or the other way around). BUT if, like me, you are frustrated by the poor sound from your TV, and especially muddled dialogue, then it is a very fine option. Turning it on for the first time was little short of a revelation. For someone that is with no previous exposure to ‘home cinema’ systems. I expect if you worked in Vue, or whatever, you’d find it mighty tame. But, for someone embarking on their first soundbar, or who doesn’t want to spend more on the sound than the visuals, it won’t disappoint. It has made watching television far more relaxed and enjoyable. The bass is extended far more than my Sony could manage and the stereo separation truly remarkable. I know this may sound daft, perhaps it is, but the sound now actually emanates from the speaker’s mouths, rather than just being in the corner of the room. I have never experienced that before on a TV. You can hear the difference between an actor on the left of the screen and one on the right. Take it from me then the handling of vocals by this Bose is spot one. I should add perhaps this is without using the dialogue boost option. I haven’t needed that. I also have the bass set to default, that’s ample for me. The remote control is also excellent, it has replaced separate ones for the TV (Sony as said), recorder (Humax) and old DVD player (Phillips). That, in itself, is pretty handy. I am using optical link and the auto on/off works flawlessly. "One ring (remote) to rule them all ...........and in the darkness bind them " (apologies to Tolkien). Like the sound bar itself the remote feels rock solid and gives promise of a very long life. Setup, including the remote control, is fast and simple. It works just like just it says on the tin, so to speak. I was initially concerned when considering the Bose about the absence of HDMI-ARC, mainly because of the potential need to use two controls, one for tv and one for sound volume. However, this issue is completely side-stepped by the superb remote. I cannot really recommend this Bose too much. If you have sensible expectations of this cheap(ish) soundbar, and don’t want to match it with some 60 inch tv and expect it to fill a 30 foot room with earthquakes, then give it serious consideration.

More or less brilliant
I have a Samsung smart TV and a Humax PVR. After researching soundbars I opted for the Bose Solo 5. I've not been disappointed with my choice. You are aware of the Bose quality even before plugging it in. Connecting it to the TV with the optical cable took a few seconds - you just push through the spring-loaded hatch to connect to the optical sockets. I placed the soundbar in my open-fronted TV console unit rather than in front of the TV. Then I turned off the TV speakers via the TV menu - quite straightforward. The remote control is excellent - and almost intuitive - but a I checked the user guide and was soon able to turn on the soundbar. The sound is really really superb - with a clarity and overall EQ balance that was a pleasure to experience. Pressing the "speech" button button on the remote makes dialog even clearer - which is a boon for people with tinnitus like me. Within an hour I had also programmed via the remote to automatically turn on the soundbar when any source is requiring sound is on + use the remote to control the TV and main functions of the Humax. Still unable to get the DVR button on the remote to work (maybe not compatible with my Humax?) - or the subtitles (CC) button for the Humax (but it does work for the TV) but for Humax I can bring up the Guide, access Recordings and get to Netflix, YouTube, iPlayer etc. - all via the Menu button. A main learning point was that you press a programmed white Source button first - say for the TV (the Source button briefly lights up to confirm) - then the remote buttons just work for the TV functions. And continue to do so until another source button is pressed. Press another Source button - say for the Humax - and the remote buttons work for the Humax functions. And so on. I have also connected my iPad via bluetooth quickly and successfully. Wonderful to be able to play music into a decent sound system without wires. I'm sure there is more to explore and learn - but so far I consider this to be a fantastic bit of kit - and great value.

Phenomenal. You can't go wrong with Bose.
Having read the reviews for this sound bar i was somewhat sceptical, as many seemed to suggest that it was really only suitable for a small-ish room. I had already placed the order (typical me) after reading the reviews and it was too late to cancel the item. How happy and glad I am that I didn't have the chance to cancel it. I was firstly drawn into purchasing it simply because it is made by Bose, and thought that was a good enough reason to be buying it. Firstly, music. The quality of the sound is simply phenomenal for the price that I paid for this system. I own a SoundDock Portable of which I no longer use due to the sheer quality of music that is produced from this sound bar. As I live in the top floor of a flat, I have to be somewhat cautious about how loud I play music or watch the television, so I rarely if ever have it at even 3/4 of the way of maximum volume, because it is just simply that loud comparatively to its size. The bass packs a heavy punch which doesn't overwhelm the vocals or other parts of the music at all - it seems in almost perfect balance. I listen to a range of music, from electronic to classic to "hardcore gangster rap" - all of which this system handles easily and elegantly. As for use for the actual television - which is the reason as to why I bought it, all I can say is that the quality is crystal clear. A vast improvement over the TV speakers which is to be expected with just about any sound bar, but this takes the cake. What I have noticed is that it picks up voices very well and dialogue is easily heard through these speakers, in scenes containing a lot of background noise voices are still crystal clear. I really started to appreciate the quality of these speakers watching Pitch Perfect the other day - not a regular type of choice for myself however it demonstrated the sheer capability of this system. Perhaps its because it is a very musically orientated system (or at least that is the feel that I get from it) that is why it shone through. Watching the Dark Knight Rises opening scene was also a breath taking experience as it does provide a surround sound experience and the sound really did send shivers down my spine, much like it did in the cinema itself. The set up was simply, plug in and go. The bluetooth functionality is a huge bonus for me as it means i can simply connect my phone up and play music through it. It looks sleek, stylish and elegant underneath my TV and is actually quite small in comparison to other systems, yet packs a mighty punch. I have used high-end sound bars such as the Sonos Playbar, and my sister owns the Solo 10 system. I was honestly not expecting much after using the playbar over the years, however I have been nothing but pleasantly surprised by this system. It is just such a joy to use and hear. I really cannot flaw this system because for the price, I honestly don't think you'll find anything better. I highly recommend this to anyone regardless of the size of your room - unless you live in a palace, but then why would you be looking at this?

Setting up was easy, plug the power cable in and coax cable ...
Setting up was easy, plug the power cable in and coax cable as I didn’t have an optical port on my TV. So that’s 2 cables to plug in and well that’s it actually, the booklet shows you how to connect everything if you’re unsure. I turned everything on and just like that it was working, was very pleased how easy it actually was and straight away the quality hit me. The base which was set to standard was great, the rich sounds and crystal clear quality flowed from the bar and straight away I knew I had made the right choice. Watching films or listening to music is such a vast improvement hearing all the additional sounds in the background, I get the feeling that I’m in my own little cinema which is really what I wanted. No sync issues, or delay / lag in audio and not a single adverse negative effect. The only issue that I seem to be having is pairing my controls but I will look into that a little more, for me though it really does not bother me having a couple of controllers around and certainly not an issue to mark down the score for this product. Good • Great Base / Sound Quality • Simple to set up • Looks great and quality build. Bad • Tricky to pair remote to TV & Virgin Box Conclusion For a fairly decent price you get a top brand, top quality sound bar. This no doubt will improve instantly the quality and audio experience you get from your TV. Watching a film or listening to music you are going to be emerged into the experience. No doubt this was a great purchase and I would highly recommend this sound bar.

Mixed feelings -
I am a great fan of Bose products. I have their noise cancelling head phones (brilliant) I have a Bose soundlink Mini (brilliant) any bose speaker connected to a tv would undoubtedly improve sound quality. My wife watches a lot of evening tv and continually complained of sound quality from our Sony smart Tv KDL-32W705B which is a flat screen and about 5years old. My son suggested plugging in my Bose soundlink which was connected via a standard audio cable (not a co ax or an optical cable) this made a huge to difference to sound quality from the TV - happy wife.. Spring and summer are just around the corner - I enjoy sitting in the conservatory or garden listening to music etc using my portable Bose soundlink connected to my ipad music library via bluetooth. So I realised we needed a new sound bar for the tv and spotted the Bose Solo 5 system on amazon, so having read the reviews and the spec decided to buy. It came promptly in about 3 days - good delivery well packaged etc. Set it up using the optical cable and it worked fine. Nothing scientific that will back this up - but I think the soundlink sounded better. But the real problem came with the remote. We have a fairly new smart tv, a Sony, we have a free view box. Both of these have their own remotes. So I convinced my self we could use the new Bose remote to make 2 remotes redundant and use the Bose speaker remote to control all the devices. Thats what the blurb said in the sales pitch anyway. Not a chance - having spent about 3 hours watching utube videos, searching the internet for codes reading the instructions from Bose and pressing buttons numerous times - the Bose remote failed to connect to anything except the Solo 5. So we could have ended up with 3 remotes to control our devices. We would have run out of shelf space with all the remotes. So this morning, reluctantly, and feeling slightly embarrassed, over breakfast told my wife I was returning the Solo 5 to Amazon. 5 stars to Amazon by the way, for their returns service ( hopefully the cash will be back in my account in a few days. So for anybody who is thinking of buying a Solo 5 and has managed to read this far - hear is my advice. You could save yourself about £100 if you bought the Bose soundlink mini instead. It is easy to hook up to the TV. No remote, Just control the TV sound volume with your existing Tv remote, the sound quality is excellent and it is portable, if you want to take into the garden. It doesn't take up hardly any shelf space. But If you have an old enigma machine and an old Bletchley Park code cracker dossier, or you may just get lucky you may want to take a risk and buy the Solo 5 and be able to use their “universal” remote. The choice is yours. Im going to buy another sound link mini. ( If I can get away with it)

Tip Top Solo vs solo 5

Pas perfect in onze tv kast. Als ik 1 minpunt moet geven is het voor de afstandsbediening, deze is echt groot. Verder heel tevreden van onze Bose soundbar!
