Uncommon History of Common Things, An

Bought it for the kids, now challenge is to see if I can get them to read it.

This book is going to both my granddaughters for Christmas. Whether they appreciate it or not remains to be seen with the instant gratification that exists today. I remember books like this that I had as a child and would read over and over again because they were “reference books” and are not supposed to be read once and then forgotten. If you tried to read this through, your eyes would glaze over; they are meant to be sampled repeatedly over time. It’s written for adults but can easily be assimilated by children if they try and children need to be stimulated and tested to develop their curiosity, don’t they?

We have several trivia geeks in our family so this was a great idea for Grandpa for Christmas. It has now been read by three different generations and everybody has had a lot of fun with it. It is interesting how the different ages hone in on different topics and remember totally different things. If you like funky and different this is great. Also an easy read for kids because the write ups on each topic averages 2 pages.

A very nice book but with little real information. As others have said, it makes a nice coffee table item that people will pick up and look through (mostly at the high quality pictures) but no one will actually read. My 4 star rating is mostly for the pictures and the high quality of the pages.

What it claims to be. But not the best of its kind.

I gave this as a gift, so my opinion is second hand, but my brother-in-law seemed to love it. He is a trivia nut and said he was fascinated with all of the interesting things he has been reading. I think he really loves it. Its fun to give gifts that can be shared and enjoyed for years. He told me he found it in my nephews room the other day. I thought that was wonderful. I recommend this book highly.

I purchased this book for my son from Amazon. He enjoys reading about uncommon subjects. His response when he opened the package was an enthusiastic "this looks interesting". The gift was a hit. How he felt after reading it......I don't know.

I just love books like this. I saw it in the National Geographic catalogue, but it was much more expensive than on Amazon. Glad I was able to buy it here. Great content and great gift-giving idea!
