A little big large than I was anticipating. Plumb bob functions as a plumb bob.

Great Stanley Quality; Perfect Size For Rough-Centering Tripods
I prefer to use Stanley plumb bobs because I find their quality to be the best(I have had problems with other brands). I also appreciate being supplied with an extra tip. This 8-ounce version is the same shape as the 16-ounce version, contrary to the picture on the product page. It is 4+1/2 inches long. The packaging is also the same as the 16-ounce version aside from being smaller. This is the perfect size to use for centering tripods. I use it to rough-center theodolites(surveying instruments). To string it, I use nylon building cord; I heat the end and while still soft, draw it into a point; it is then easy to feed through the hole with a twisting motion. Then tie a knot(a figure eight knot is traditional) to secure it. The other end of the line should also be treated to prevent unraveling.

Its a pointed weight
Lost the old one I had for years somewhere in the mud, needed a new one. When I looked up plumb bob to order 1 I was absolutely mind blown at the variance in pricing, some were as much as $50-$60, there were even 2 different ones listed at almost $400 each! Are you kidding me? This isn’t some high tech digital device where a $6 one isn’t going to work nearly as well as a $60 or even $400 model. No better example exists of “a fool and their money”. Its a pointed weight you tie to the end of a string, a $60 model isn’t going to detect gravity any better than a $6 model. The only difference is some are brass and won’t rust, some are just steel, this one is brass, I only bought it over the cheaper steel ones because it won’t rust, even though rust isn’t going to have an affect on what its used for.Since the ancient Egyptians first laid claim to inventing these 4000 years ago there have been zero scientific breakthroughs that would advantage a $60 plumb bob from working any better than a $6 or $12 model. Don’t spend more, the gravity these all rely on to work is free, even the government hasn’t found a way to tax us for gravity yet.

Beautifully machined and polished
Like the 16 oz. plumb bob from Stanley, the 8 oz. plumb bob is made of beautifully machined brass and comes with a replacement tip. I bought the 8 oz. at the same time that I bought the 16 oz., not knowing the advantages or disadvantages of the difference in weight. After using them for a variety of tasks, I can see two advantages to the heavier bob: One is that the string is tauter and doesn't move as much when you try to mark it; The second is that if you're working outside, the heavier bob won't be as easily disturbed by wind playing on the string. But, for most indoor applications you won't notice the difference, except that the 8 oz. bob is easier to work with if you don't need the extra stability. The shape of the bob makes it settle very quickly. The point makes it easy to see when it has stopped swaying by comparing with a mark on the floor. It also allows you to find the precise point on the floor under a particular point on the ceiling. It would have been nice if a string was included in the package.

Beautiful, worth the money
It's as shiny as this view, a bit more pointy. I actually bought it for a photo shoot, and wanted the brass to gleam like gold, and it surely did. It's a beauty. Doesn't come with string, but any string, twine or even fishing line will work. Tip: when knotting the string, leave a 1" tail past the knot, and singe the tip (end) with a match so it doesn't unravel. The tail will make it easier to fish out later, say if the string is damaged and you wish to restring it.It's beautiful, and makes a great pendulum for kid's science projects. it can also serve as a hanging weight, when you don't want the breeze to whip things around. It's made to hang.
