The Best Guidebook
Rough Guide comes through again. This is a fantastic book, thorough and comprehensive. Excellent maps, descriptions, and need-to-knows. Also well made, with quality paper and printing.

Disappointing- not the same Rough Guides I've used before
I've used Rough Guides in the past, for New Zealand and Hawaii, and found them chock full of excellent adventures, some well off the beaten path. These recent versions for Italy are no such work. They contain only very basic information about each place, with lists of restaurants and hotels, all of which we can easily find visually or with Google. No hidden gems, and no adventures enroute :(

The love of Italy
I've used Rough Guides on a few previous trips, and recently dug out a somewhat elderly copy of the guide to Andalusia when revisiting Seville, so bought this to take along on a holiday in Southern Italy earlier this month. It's a comprehensive (and fairly hefty) guide to the whole country, handily divided into regions, and topped and tailed with helpful articles about its history, literature, architecture, culture, etc. I found these interesting, and the limited details it contained about the places we visited (Lecce, Matera, Bari, Vieste) were helpful - although these were clearly constrained by the amount of space available in a survey of the whole country. But I also read the guides to other Italian towns (inc. Padua, Florence, Mantova, Bergamo and Bassano) that we'd been to, and they provoked pleasant memories of earlier trips.
