Good but...
I like this book but there's one little thing. The story is clever for an adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic story. Morpurgo retains much of L. Frank Baum's language and plot except Toto becomes a central character in the story and I confess I like it. The illustrations are wonderful and fun to look at. I received this book as a gift and really enjoyed it. I liked the reminders that there are five characters in the story not just four as Toto is a part of this quest too. Okay here's my beef, Morpurgo forgot to credit L. Frank Baum as the actual original author. This book is an adaptation and much of the plot, tornado, munchkins, the good witch of the north, the Kalidahs, and the wizard. Morpurgo omits the fighting trees, the china country, the giant spider, the hammerheads and Glinda. Glinda is not in the story and that mystifies me. Even so I like this book, it's fun to read. I just wish Morpurgo would credit Baum as the author.

Inspiring
Both Michael and Emma are responsible for getting our son motivated to read, he has special needs and has really struggled to learn to read. This book is absolutely magicial, at the age of 10 he has started independently to try and read this book and only this book. We have a running commentary on who Emma has based the characters of the book on.Beautiful words amazing illustrations so captivating for a child. Congratulations to Emma and Michael on a wonderful creation.

A brilliant re-telling of the famous story from Toto's point of view. I absolutely adored Emma's beautiful illustrations as they don't make some of the characters as look too scary for younger children. Toto looks just like Emma's illustrations of her dog Plum on Plumdog's blog. Highly recommend this book. Well done to Michael and Emma. This will be family favourite for many years to come.

The book itself is just beautiful, with truly superb illustrations. Written from Toto's perspective, this book has been a huge hit with my eight year old niece who is obsessed with dogs and loves all stories magical. A wonderful gift for children everywhere!
