Comfortable, versatile, sturdy, very kind to your back and body -- and worth every penny!
For the past 5 years, I've worked from home on a desktop computer. I used a high-end office chair at first but suffered back pain and leg numbness even though the chair was supposedly "ergonomic." After doing a lot of online research (and watching way too many YouTube videos), I decided to "go for the gusto" and buy the Varier Variable Kneeling Chair. I liked that it's a time-tested design, that it allows more side-to-side movement than the imitators that feature more bracing, and that the seat and leg pads, while thinner than on the imitators, were reported to be more comfortable. I've had it just over a year and it's been a tremendous improvement! It took a day or two to get used to but, after that, it's been very comfortable and the back pain and leg numbness have disappeared. I've had to tighten the leg pads once but, other than that, no adjustments have been necessary and the chair looks brand new. I just ordered a second one to use at the mixing desk in my music studio. Basically, the Varier Variable Kneeling Chair is everything the good reviews report: comfortable, versatile, sturdy, and very kind to your back and body. Is it costly? Yes, but your body's comfort and health are worth it. Very, very highly recommended!

Expensive, but next-level quality and comfort
Expensive, but I've tried the top "knock off" brand sold on Amazon, and there's no comparison. This is a high quality chair, it's a 20+ layer laminate that's very strong yet flexible, which is intentional. The cushions are an order of magnitude better than the cheap chairs, half the thickness yet double the comfort. Plus you get a 3-year full warranty and 10-year limited warranty. Yes, the chair is expensive, but after breaking the other brand's chair after 6 months of use, I realize I should have just spent extra and went with the original design. If you have lower back stiffness and/or pain when sitting in office chairs, this will help.

Superior Quality Product to other kneeling chairs

Here are my findings. Wood: The expensive chair has thicker wood. The cheaper chair's wood is the same width, but about 2/3 the height thickness, suggesting it would support less weight or wear out more quickly. Padding: Expensive chair has thinner, but denser padding. Cheap chair has almost excessively thick padding that quickly flattens out as soon as you sit on it. My main concern is that the padding on the cheap chair will go completely flat after a year or so. Only time will tell. Fabric: Material on both chairs seems to be reasonable quality and not likely to rip or pop seams any time soon, but the fabric on the more expensive chair is rougher and a bit abrasive on bare skin after sitting for a while. Support bars: The expensive chair has a single support bar in the back but is surprisingly sturdy. I thought the knee supports would be very wobbly but are actually sturdier than the cheap chair with the additional cross bars. I am very disappointed in the placement of the cross bars on the cheap chair because I sometimes pinch my toes under them as I rock. It seems like a no-brainer to avoid them, but when you are sitting in it all day working from home, it happens more often than you'd think. Additionally, the cross bars create more contact points with the floor which could cause problems on hard wood. Assembly: I encountered the same issue on either chair which is easily resolved. Don't tighten all the screws before you put the main seat on. Leave some wobble so you can set it on the pegs and guide the screws in more easily, otherwise it will be difficult. I had no other assembly issues. Most complaints about assembly are probably written by mechanically incompetent people. You really don't even need instructions to put these chairs together. Rocking Motion: The more expensive chair seems to have a wider and smoother rocking range. The cheaper chair tends to lean you forward a bit more keeping your center of gravity forward with more pressure on the knee supports. I hate to say it, but this single factor is what wins for me on the cheap chair since it is better for my back. The only way for people to really know what will be best for them is to try them. Other features: The angle of the seat and knee supports on the more expensive chair feel about perfect, whereas the cheaper chair's seat feels angled forward a bit too much putting extra pressure on your tailbone area. I suppose the angle adjustment would feel different from person to person though. The more expensive chair comes with adhesive felt strips to put under it for use on wood floors, where the cheap chair comes with nothing. While using the cheap chair, I rolled over a small pebble (something hard) which pressed and lodged itself into the chair's wood. Every time I rocked on it until I discovered and removed the pebble, I scratched and damaged my wood floor. On either chair you should tighten the screws periodically as they tend to come loose with use, but the cheap chair's screws seemed to come loose more quickly with the same use. The more expensive chair has a place to add an optional backrest (for $150 more), but the cheap chair does not. Neither chair has height adjustability, but either are adequate height for use at a normal height work desk. Some of the non-rocking chairs I have had are too tall when using wheels. Overall impressions: The expensive chair is superior in material quality and overall function in every way to the cheaper chair. The only question is, is that quality worth the additional $200+?

Low back pain gone
I have been using a high end office chair. I was continuing to have low back pain and muscle spasms, especially when standing up after sitting for an hour. My chiropractor told me to get a standing desk. I decided to try this kneeling chair. I have been using it daily for a week. My low back pain and the muscle spasm is gone. I have no back muscle tightness. And I have been surprised at the comfort of the chair. I adapted to the leg position quickly. What I did notice at the beginning was some muscle tightness and fatigue in my mid back, between my shoulder blades. I think this has been simply from a new position. That has significantly decreased over the week. I find the cushions/padding comfortable. Easy to sit and kneel on for hours. Easy assembly. It is sturdy. I'm 6 feet 2 inches and weigh 192 lbs. It is very lite to pick up and move. Sometimes I do rock on it. I like that feature. The height is perfect for me. Fits easy with my desk. I'm happy I bought it.

Good for Back Pain, Promotes Movement
Everyone knows that all day sitting is horrible for the body. I have been using my new varier balans chair for about a week now. I put it together myself very quickly and easily. Remember to save the little allen wrench and place it in the storage pouch on the underside of the chair. They say after two weeks you should tighten the bolts once more and then whenever you need to thereafter. This chair has been an adjustment for my body. I got it due to horrible back pain from sitting in a traditional office chair doing computer work. In the varier chair you can rock back and forth which I do quite a bit now, especially to music. This promotes constant movement/healthy fidgeting. I also change position with my shins on the pads and prop my foot up on the shin pad (this also opens the hip flexor)...basically there are many combinations of how you can sit in this chair and the whole point is to not maintain the same position for hours which is much better for your body. My shins tend to get a bit sore if I leave them on the shin pads for longer periods but I think it's just getting used to the chair still. My back no longer aches at the end of the work day which is a problem solved. Be sure not to slouch or hunch over in the chair. The curvature of the seat pad does not promote this but you can hunch if you really want to. If a person is super tall or shorter I'm not sure how this chair will fit....for reference I'm nearly 5'6 and it seems fine for me and easy to get in and out of. I read online that you can also turn the chair backwards and sit on it that way so the combos are pretty vast in how to use it. I highly recommend regular rocking back and forth to do a bit of spine 'massage' and flexion. Bottom line - if you're unsure, try it...worst case you give it a few weeks and return if it's not the right fit for your body.

Very rickety and wobbly. Very disappointed. May return it.
I have years of experience with IKEA-type furniture like this. The kneeling chair was not easy to put together. Attaching the seat was very difficult. The process drove one wooden peg on each side into the cushion so they are not connecting the seat to the legs. I have tightened the bolts to my utmost strength but the chair wobbles badly. It feels very rickety. To the company: Is there any solution for this problem? If not I must return the chair immediately. I am VERY disappointed. Thank you. UPDATE: Disassembling the piece for return I found that the Allen wrench had stripped the heads of the bolts. I'm sad to say that this is not a quality piece.

Get the original
I explored different versions of the “kneeling chair” on different websites, and on Amazon. All the others talked about difficulties with assembly, in the reviews. It was confusing to sort out, because some places showed reviews for the Varier, when that was not what they were actually selling! Be careful to look at the pictures so you know what you are getting. I chose to go with the original Norwegian Varier kneeling chair, here, and I can tell you, it is beautiful, very well made, and was quite easy and smooth to assemble. All the holes, pegs and screws lined up perfectly. If you can afford the extra cost, it does seem to be worth it. For me, the chair is comfortable. After a couple of hours seated properly, some core muscles were tired; a sign that they can use some toning! However, you can put your feet down between the knee rests and sit like that for a bit, or even put your feet up on the knee rests and rock back for a while, if you are flexible and enjoy that position. My only complaint is that my “sit bones” were feeling it after a while. I’m thin, and there is not a whole lot of padding on the seat for long sessions. I’m going to try putting another little pillow on the seat for those days (but not too much, or it will throw off the ergonomics.)

Hmmm. Like it, but the price and durability is questionable.
I like the looks, and I really like the rocking part, I don't think I'd like a knee chair that doesn't rock. And this one seems like an okay rocker chair, with what is likely the right lower body ergonomics, although compared to expectations of Ikea furniture, it seems substantially overpriced. I am 6'2, and 178lbs. The chair fits me alright. I work off of a desk extension which is a little lower than it should be given my height, only 28 1/2", and the Balanz makes me quite a bit taller than my adjustable height run of the mill office chair. But I find I am sitting closer up to the desk and the laptop keyboard height is still acceptable so far. But I have had to elevate my webcam by about 8 inches to maintain a fairly eye level placement, from both sitting higher and sitting more erect. The same height adjustment would be needed with a monitor as well if you are attempting to maintain a horizontal eye position. Since my desk is lower than the standard desk height of 30 inches, I would guess most people may want to elevate their monitors by 3 to 6 inches when switching from a standard chair based on user height. But I don't think this would be a work surface height concern - in general, I would speculate that the ergonomics of your work position can probably handle the height of this chair in most cases - not because you can change your position somewhat (it really doesn't make any difference in height no matter how your tilt on it) but rather because with the tilt of your legs and pelvis, you tend to sit a little bit further forward with natural spine curvature and consequently your arms can tolerate a greater variation of work surface height. I would not sit as close as I am at this moment in a normal chair, but this scooted up / more erect position is quite comfortable and natural feeling. Now, in terms of the chair itself, for the price of sale, I certainly have some questions about its value. It is a nice quality of wood and upholstery. But, even at might weight, it has a considerable amount of flex if I'm wiggling on the chair at all. For the price, this really surprised me. But it is wood, and perhaps this flex adds to its comfort unless the chair just simply breaks, which I'm nervous about. Moreover, I am fairly long in leg, and I find the knee pad and seat position has the pads typically resting right below my knees on my shins. I've never had the toughest shins (that was one of my secret nemeses in any type of martial arts), and they tend to be bony, and in turn I find this position fairly uncomfortable, abrasive, and hot on my shins when wearing my typical summer home office attire of shorts. I'm fairly oblivious to or tolerant of discomfort, so I'll put up with this for about 2 hours max on these first couple of days, but by then I definitely need a break. In contrast, if my wife were experiencing this, I think it would have been over in about 3 minutes and the chair would already be back at Amazon. I can adjust my position such that I could use knees, but it causes a further back butt placement on the main cushion, and tilts my pelvis in a less ideal way with undue pressure on the back of my legs, so this is definitely a forced and uncomfortable position only suitable for giving my shins short breaks. So where do I rank this chair? Pros: 1. Feels good on the hip and lower back 2. Has fun little rocky motion that entertains me and makes trunk feel better. 3. Lightweight and portable 4. Looks nice Cons: 1. Doesn't feel very sturdy. 2. Fairly brutal shin cushions in terms or upholstery abrasiveness and hotness. More pros, but the cons are not to be overlooked. I think those sort out to about 3 stars.

Objet magique

Top.

Works for some people
Bought for our employee who was having back troubled and it seems to help prevent the issue reoccurring. Tried it myself for a day and found it a bit much personally - too much pressure on my shins, but clearly works well for some people.
