Must have, for the SOS feature alone.
These are great. Complicated, but great.

Great (but outdated) device, usable with gloves/in the rain. Maps are outdated.
Great (albeit older) device, useful service, but outdated maps. I have an Explorer+ and really like the device itself: it’s a convenient size (a bit larger and heavier than an eTrex), has a simple interface, and handy button-based controls that are easy to use with gloves or if the screen is wet. Newer devices like the Messenger or Mini are much more difficult to use standalone (that is, without a smartphone). With a new aftermarket battery, battery life is like 4-5 days. The device continues to be supported by Garmin’s Iridium-based inReach service. Their Earthmate app still gets updates and works well when connecting to the Explorer+. You can send/receive messages using the smartphone app or the device itself. Some minor cons: - Uses MicroUSB, not USB-C. - Requires being connected to a computer and using the inReach Sync program on the computer whenever updating service plans or other major things. Newer models can sync using only a smartphone, which is more convenient. A major con is that Garmin no longer supports the DeLorme-based topographical maps for this device. The most recent update to the maps is several years old. I wouldn’t rely on this as my sole means of navigation (a map, compass, and dedicated device like an eTrex with updated maps are great), especially with outdated maps, but for glove/rain-friendly communication and emergency use, it’s great. Keep in mind that used versions of this device are widely available on various marketplaces and batteries can be replaced cheaply and easily at home. Get one of those if you’re interested. There’s no sense paying extremely high retail prices for an outdated device when there’s newer and more capable inReach devices being sold by Garmin for much less.

Fast satellite capture and excellent battery life
I just took my new Explorer+ to the bottom of Grand Canyon(and back). I was impressed with how quickly the unit captured 3D satellite tracking. It seemed like less than a minute although I didn’t time it. Garmin has done a good job with the User interface with a simple and intuitive control pad and function interface from the Home menu. Battery life was excellent and could have been even better with improved battery management practices. I especially liked the Quick Reply and Shared Tracking functions, allowing quick communications using standard pre-written texts and allowing my daughter to track me on her iPhone during my entire trek, something she enjoyed doing. I would highly recommend the Explorer+

Garmin quality
I replaced the Mini that I bought last year because it seemed to take a long time to connect to satellites and since I hunt by myself most of the time, I want to be able to send out an SOS if I need to immediately and not be second guessing if it has made contact with the satellites. I haven't used it yet but have it attached to my hunting vest, just waiting to go. Last year I used the month-by-month subscription package but this year I activated it for the whole year. It is about the same money when you figure in the yearly activation fee on the month-by-month package.

Piece of doo-doo
Died on me after lying in the closet for 2 years. Won't charge, won't start up. For a $400 product, it's a piece of you know what.

A life Saver
I also have a previous model which I use regularly. It's invaluable for reaching people when out of cell service areas. I bought this newer version for my husband's use. I highly recommend it.
