Q: Are there actual directions? Received one without and figuring it out is frustrating.

Hey, no, there were no directions received. Just switched it on for single player, hit the balls as they light up; or opponent option, try to get the most balls. Hope this helps.

Q: What size batteries and how many?

I gave it away last Christmas so I am not sure but I only gave only one toy with odd batteries so 90% sure that this one took either AA or AAA batteries, probably AA. Number was either 2 or 3 batteries. Battery information was on the box somewhere because I always give batteries as part of the gift. Surprised that it wasn't part of the description.
