How thick are the tiles?

About 1/4 of an inch, very light weight and easy to install, did a 250sq ft room and I am very pleased

Do the edges overlap adjacent tiles or butt up against them edge-to-edge?

The tiles butt up to one another. They are made from a Styrofoam-like material, so are thin. You could probably overlap them without it looking obvious, if you are concerned with gaps. Or fill any gaps with caulk, especially if you will be painting the tiles.
