DNS For Dummies

Great Book... Configured my Home DNS Server in one day...!
This book is worth it... The version I have is from 2002, but the concepts are still relevant. For me the makings of a good book, is one that makes the complex concepts understandable enough so that you can implement real-life scenarios. I now have a home DNS server that my kids will use so that I can monitor which websites they will be able to access. Then I will use my home firewall to block them from using any other DNS server, just in case they try to change the windows desktop DNS server settings. Great book... I was up and running in no time....

Starts off slowly
Starts off slowly and a bit too "dummy" for me but progresses into the meat of the matter and seems pretty thorough. If you are an advanced user and don't like to have to skim ahead get an O'Reilly book. If you are new or was fairly knowledgeable but need a refresher (that was me) this book will do nicely.

Excellent Book
This is an excellent book for both beginners and those with some knowledge of DNS and how it works. It starts with the basics and includes how DNS relates to TCP/IP and the OSI model. It continues with setting up your DNS servers and troubleshooting. It continues on with more advanced concepts and security issues. All this is in a very readable format.

True to its name
I have read a few in the "Dummies" series and found them to be very good, but not as high level as the titles would suggest. This book is, however, very high level. It is very basic. If you know nothing about DNS, this is the book for you. If you have a basic understanding of DNS, then I would not recommend this book.

A great book, just not quite sufficient for true "dummies" like me
I would like to be able to give this book 5 stars but it is a little light on the explanation of some of the intermediate level topics. For example, the explanation of the OSI model in the first section of the book makes a few too many assumptions about the education level of the reader.

"This book focuses on the clients and servers for Microsoft windows 2000..."
That''s about all you need to know. Book has some stale content.

Might be good if you're on Windows NT servers
This book may be OK if you're still running on Windows NT or Windows 2000 servers. It's just so out of date now and there's no mention of Mac OSX or how to integrate with that. returned mine!

Drier and a dry thing, in a desert, surrounded by Silica gel
I think this book'd be ok, if I were able to keep my eyes open long enough to make it through the chapters.I've bought *many* (too many?) Dummies books over the years and enjoy their chatty delivery and page turning explanations, this one, whoa boy, this one's different. Page after page of words, followed by more words. the word 'zones' cropped up with no explanation as to what these new found 'zones' were - or maybe I were day-dreaming that I were reading 'Long Walk to Freedom' + 'War and Peace' and 'the Complete Works of Dickens" simultaneously. I'm persevering as I'm kinda hoping that it's going to make sense to me but I keep finding myself too eager to dismantle my pencil and jab it through my tongue.Considering I'm only on page 25 ... I'm kinda thinking I'm not going to make it without stapling it to my forehead.
