Ignore some of the reviews where people give incorrect information and say this magnet is colored wrong. It's not colored wrong. If checking guitar humbuckers for example, red points at the south coil; blue points at the north coil. Opposites attract. If you point this unit towards the earth's north pole, the red end will point to the north, because the north pole is negative charged; If you point this unit towards the south pole, the blue end will point to the south, as the south pole is positively charged.

A pole detector shows the direction of a magnetic field, and would respond to slow changes in the field strength and direction. Your underground wire would have to be carrying a direct current so as to generate a magnetic field with a constant field strength at any particular location. The pole detector has too high an inertia to respond to a magnetic field created by an alternating current at 60 Hz, for example. You need a metal detector if you are looking for underground wires. Whether the wire(s) were carrying any current or none would be immaterial to a typical metal detector.
