Why wont these connect to my virgin broadband router 100meg speed 2.4ghz?

The newer Virgin routers and some other branded routers broadcast one SSID (wireless network name) which combines both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz WiFi channels. Automatically connecting your device accordingly.

If however the device you are trying to connect only supports 2.4Ghz you may find you'll struggle.

Your best solution is to locate your routers admin details and then access the settings menu to rename the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels. I'd suggest you leave the 2.4Ghz as it is and just rename the 5Ghz SSID by adding 5G to the end of the existing SSID so you can easily differentiate between the two WiFi channels.

Then when you connect any future device that only supports 2.4Ghz WiFi you'll now be easily able to add it to your router.

I've had no ends of these to help family and friends with, handy I guess when you work in IT.

For each router model out there, there will be online support and guidance if you get stuck! Though it might seem daunting to the novice to tackle, it really is as straight forward as for example searching for a product on Amazon!

Do these have energy monitoring and how are they different from b07k7d74hf ?

The reference you quoted is for the mini-smart plug, these do not have energy monitoring. 
If you want energy monitoring then don’t buy Meross. The energy monitoring is not very accurate.

Can two of these be used, side by side, in a standard UK twin outlet?

Of course. You set them individually, doesn't matter where they'll be plugged in.

How many on and offs can the plug be programmed for per day?

The plug can be programmed either via Alexa Routines or via the Plug APP to switch on off every minute. ( Easier via APP as all under one schedule rather than multiple routines in Alexa ).  This works out at 720 on's and 720 off's,  which should be enough :)
