The kit comes with Gates Barricade hose with a Teflon shield three layers in to prevent permeation. That means no funky smells in the cabin. McNally's clean side solution is a simple but effective way to ensure 100% of the blow-by byproduct vapors are routed to the can. The kit is simple to install and instructions are available. Sure you can by a cheap catch can but most likely it's just an empty can that will allow vapors in to just go right back out.
