UNSUB: A Novel (An UNSUB Novel) Hardcover – June 27, 2017

Unsub was very entertaining, with twists and turns along the way. The characters are well developed. The author did an excellent job interweaving time passing between the original investigator of the murder, the main character's father and having the murderer's file fall on her desk as a SFPD officer as well. There is a great balance between the main character, Caitlin, and her father Mack and how they have both struggled with bringing in the Unsub killer. I also enjoyed the literary connection with Dante's Inferno and all the symbolism with it, as well as the use of Mercury. (Read the book, it's very clever!)I was a little disappointed with the ending. Everything seemed rushed and haphazardly put together. As if the author was running out of time on how to tie up some loose ends. Then a wrench gets thrown into the works. I understand wanting to set up for the next novel, but there are better ways to do than the way it was done in the end. Thought it was a pretty lazy ending. If I were to grade the novel on a whole, I'd give it a solid B+.

Can't believe this was the same Meg Gardiner whose earliest books I read avidly and still possess in my library. As another critic has pointed out that murderer in this book is almost a comic book evil genius. The murders are so dependent on so many factors and gadgets that the murderer has to be both a scientific mastermind and and possessing of a preternatural Prozac calm. I am debating whether to read second book in series (set in my area of Texas and based on Ted Bundy) --sounds like it more guided by reality from description but "Unsub" had a villain who made Hannibal Lector look like a "too bit gunsel" and far out there doesn't make for suspense.

I have long been a fan of Meg Gardiner and have read and loved all of her books! I was so excited to see that she had a new one soon to be released. I ordered Unsub, received it the day it was released and started it immediately! I was literally blown away. Meg Gardiner has always been one of my favorite authors. When I started reading the new one, I was hooked immediately! An amazing female main character, Caitlin is feisty, brilliant, determined, tough, and will do most anything to see justice prevail. And she also has a soft side and can cry, has empathy for the victims, bleeds for her father, and loves unconditionally. The story itself was superb and kept me awake for several nights since I could not put it down. And then the ending! Well, let's just say that I heard my jaw drop!! And so happy that this is just the first in a series and thank you Meg Gardiner for that. Now the long wait until the next one is released. Thanks for an amazing story and the time spent enjoying it.

Season One, Pilot Episode, Complete and looks like this is going to be a WINNER!I've seen a lot of referencing this book to the show Criminal Minds and I can absolutely see why. As one of my favorite shows, clearly I LOVE this book! If you don't already know, Unsub is short for Unknown Subject, the person(s) being sought for the crime(s). I have always been fascinated by this kind of work because you really have to dig into the mind of the criminal and his behavior in order to try and get a step ahead to beat him/her.Bring in Caitlin, daughter of the father who almost caught the Prophet, but didn't, causing his life to fall apart around him. Will she follow in his path and not only be bested, but have it cause her physical, mental and social strife?My goodness does Gardiner give us the works with this novel. We have a highly intelligent Unsub who is patient enough that his terror has reigned for over two decades. He has a plan and is meticulous, leaving cryptic clues while sitting in the background giddy over his successes. What better mouse to play with than the daughter of the one you bested decades ago? Oh what an intricate plot you weave!If you love the show Criminal Minds, behavioral analysis and/or a proper gruesome, well thought out serial killer rampage, then you are going to be quite pleased with this book. History certainly does repeat itself and comes back with a vengeance.You guys, get this book. Read it, love it, remember it.... the next book is out in January and you're going to need to get that one too. Chop chop - these are doozies and must reads in my opinion. Hells bells if you consider yourself to be a crime thriller lover then you MUST read Unsub by Meg Gardiner, it’s not just good it’s a flipping fantastic book and I would go as far to say it’s probably one of the best crime books I’ve read EVER. I read so many crime thrillers it takes a lot to scare me but this book unnerved me to the extent I had to keep checking that the doors were locked and the lights were on. Unsub caused my heart to thump and my pulse to race pretty much throughout. Drawing inspiration from the Zodiac Killer, and likened to Se7en, and Silence of the Lambs this is one book you don’t want to miss if you like your crime thrillers graphic and disturbing.As you can see this book comes with a pretty lengthy book description, so I don’t feel the need to rehash the plot in my review. I do enjoy a crime thriller with an intriguing serial killer at the heart of the plot, and Meg Gardiner has created a fascinating one, the Unsub aka The Prophet taunts law enforcement with his gruesome murders and his cryptic messages, he thrives on mind games and generating fear in a city where people are advised to be vigilant, no one knows who his next victim will be or why. I think The Prophet makes a very credible character I feel this is because as the reader you are aware the author drew inspiration from the very real Zodiac Killer, making him that much more terrifying and convincing.IMG_3736Meg Gardiner has done a superb job with character development, building her grisly psychological thriller around detective Caitlin Hendrix, whose father failed to catch the killer decades earlier. Caitlin Hendrix is probably one of the most exciting protagonists I’ve come across in a long time the author has breathed life into her, you feel her frustration, her empathy for the victims and her complex relationship with her father make her someone that I WANT to know so much more about. Unsub is an unforgettable book, fast paced, chilling and downright frightening but I loved every page of this gripping crime thriller. Every scene, every word written is pivotal to the plot and the tension that radiates throughout definitely make this one of my top reads of 2018. Now I really can’t wait to read the sequel Into The Black Nowhere. In case you haven’t already guessed I would highly, highly recommended Unsub.

I was aware of Meg Gardiner's crime-writing calibre before I read this book but have never reader her before. It wasn't until Stephen King recommended this book that I felt the need to pick her up. Caitlin Hendrix is a detective in San Francisco. She follows in her father's footsteps, he was a Homicide detective whose life fell apart during the investigation of the infamous Prophet case. The Prophet was never caught and Mack Hendrix was left broken, retired and ill - yet still always obsessed with catching the Prophet.Now, The Prophet has returned, and Caitlin, a somewhat, forced upon expert is invited to help the investigation. This rakes up bad memories as her father abandoned her and her mother for the Prophet investigation the first time round. And she risks her father's mental state now. On the other hand she does have an internet, amateur sleuth come mother of three and housewife, Deralynn helping her out.This was a solid crime read, keeps you turning the pages and the crimes are gruesome. The characters are even pretty well realised, but, and this is a big but, it feels like crime by numbers. Inexperienced cop with traumatic background? Check. Serial killer with a cool nickname? Check. Inventive MO? Check. Literary allusion? Check. I know most crime novels are formuliac, painfully so, but each successful one finds the elusive X, something that just grabs you and drags you in. Unsub doesn't have X. It was enjoyable but I fear I will forgotten it by the middle of my next read.

It’s fast paced, suspenseful and I enjoyed the fact we get to know about Caitlin’s personal life and relationships as well as her working environment. The romance with her FBI partner hit just right note and didn’t overwhelm the story.Meg Gardiner doesn’t hold back when it comes to the more gruesome aspects perpetrated by the killer, who is one of the scariest ever. Her characterisations are excellent, well drawn and believable. The clever use of symbolism throughout, even down to the cover art—the symbol for Mercury—is integral to the story. Given that it was inspired by the real life Zodiac killer who was never caught, it’s not surprising. A very tense final quarter leads to an explosive, surprising and dramatic (cliffhanger) finale which will continue in the sequel.

I bought Unsub after seeing the author being interviewed. As someone who reads a lot of crime fiction, I'm not often blown away by a book but I was by this one. The characters are well drawn & I really cared what happened to them, which made for a page turning read into the early hours when the jeopardy was ramped up for them to almost unbearable heights. The author creates a pace and tension rarely achieved in crime fiction. You can almost hear the clock ticking as the protagonist races to find the serial killer at the heart of the plot. Engaging, heart stopping, fascinating. A compelling read. Highly recommended.

Ist in a thrilling new FBI series , starring a new Detective Caitlin Hendrix. We see her begin the force as a rookie , she is up against a monster know as the Prophet. He has done it before 20 years ago , the crimes hit home as it destroyed the career of her father . Is he back or is it a copy cat?Good procedural thriller. Meg is learning her craft on this novel as in her second novel of the series the writing is better . Its called "Into the Black Nowhere" I'm reading the 3rd one called "Dark Corners of the Night" she has found her form , writing is top notch , thrilling , gripping . Fantastic series for fans of Thomas Harris , or series like Mindhunter. Must buy. ! TV have optioned a series based on the books.
