A gift for my brother
My brother, a self-taught artist, is always eager to learn new techniques to use in his paintings and drawings. He told me he was able to use quite a few of the ideas he found in the book.

No!
I do not recommend this book. The author rambles on and on, but does not give instructional or technical help. Very disappointed in this book. Wish I could receive my money and shipping back.

Lots of info, but originally published in 1897
Potential buyers should be aware that this is actually a reprint of a book originally published in 1897. Although it has a lot of useful information, I would not call it 'user friendly', so if you are a beginner-intermediate art student looking for an instruction manual, I would try another book.

High density, low pizazz
This is a classic book and I really like it. It's teaching as teaching used to be, without a lot of fancy graphics. As Jack Webb used to say in Dragnet, "Just the facts." And are there facts. Cross takes a detailed look at light and shade and puts all the cards on the table. Lots of bang for the buck in this one.

A bit too deep
No images at all. A very hard to read book!Once you start reading this book, you will be more confused that before you started!
